I’m the January 2016 Health Magazine Cover Girl!
Ummmm what! Is this even real life right now!!?? HOW IS THIS HAPPENING.
Guys…I’m soooooo excited to share with you the cover for the January 2016 issue of HEALTH MAGAZINE! So dying right now because who would have thought this moment would be possible?
As a little girl, I grew up seeing images of beautiful, predominantly Caucasian pop stars and actresses on the covers of American beauty magazines. I rarely ever saw any other ethnicity unless you were Beyonce, Tyra Banks or someone of those ranks. It was just the norm, and like many others, I just saw it and accepted it.
But today, I am SO PROUD to be representing Asian Americans as the cover girl for Health Magazine! It means so much to me because even though it’s just a picture, it shows boundaries and stereotypes being broken. Not only do I not have to be a model, actress, or pop star to make a cover, I can be me, chase my dreams and be written about because of my achievements, not my looks.
Guys, keep working hard and doing WHATEVER it takes to make your dreams come true. I am telling you right now that everything is possible. Never give up. Be persistent. And most importantly, believe in yourself especially when no one else does.
So the magazine is on stands Christmas Day. I just can’t wait to understand how it will feel looking at myself on a cover next to celebrities and models. It is definitely going to be a surreal feeling. A weird feeling indeed. I will snapchat the whole thing for sure! Follow me at Blogilates if you’re not already! Also, I have 6 whole pages inside the magazine talking about my story, what inspires me, why I feel pressured to look a certain way etc. + a fun total body POP Pilates workout for you guys! Oh and so many cool pics! SO MANY!!! Please please please go get the magazine and take a picture with it when you do! I will die if I see it!!! Like, die. If you want to read the story now (but without all the cool pics from the mag)…you can go to the website, health.com. K, ready for some behind the scenes?
I shot the cover with James White. He is a celebrity photographer who has shot basically EVERYONE. From Taylor Swift to Khloe Kardashian to Caitlyn Jenner to Jillian Michaels just to name a few. So honored to be shot by James!
Here are some shots from the computer screen that show every photo the photographer takes on his camera instantly. You wouldn’t believe it but there was like a crew of 20 people on set to make sure this one little me would have the perfect hair, makeup, lighting, wardrobe and whatever else it took to get that one cover shot.
I do want to tell you that the whole day was not stressful for me because I chose to mentally appreciate what was happening right then and there. I lived in the moment. I embraced how incredible, rare, and special this experience was. Who knows if this will ever happen again? So I cherished every moment and WORKED IT as best as I could. James was so wonderful in coaching me on how to model without smiling – which is very hard for me!! When I first tried “looking serious” I just looked like I had dead eyes. But we practiced and he told me to think fierce, to look with a purpose.
After working with him, I can see why he’s an A-list photographer. He knows how to make his subject feel CONFIDENT and he knows how to help me bring my inner model out! He’s definitely one of my favorite photographers.
Look familiar? Shooting for the cover! Really loved those shiny pants! They even had a matching shiny bra! My stylist Karen Shapiro wanted the cover to be very NEW YEAR so she chose metallics. Clearly, she knew what she was doing! She’s also one of the sweetest, most caring women ever. She made me feel so comfortable.
The beauty squad! My manicurist Jenna Hipp, my makeup artist Mai Quynh, and my hair stylist Philip Carreon were so amazing! They work with the likes of Miley Cyrus and my fave Taylor Swift. So honored to be worked on by the same hands that touched Taylor!!! 🙂
So guys…I hope you enjoyed this BTS look at what it takes to get a cover shot. We spent from 8am to 6pm shooting with SEVERAL outfit changes. Had lunch in between and kept going. Then the next day I shot a bunch of videos with Health Magazine that you can find on their site!
I want to thank Health Magazine for putting me on the cover of their publication. Like I said above, we are breaking stereotypes with this photo and I couldn’t be more pleased. The staff there is also a joy to work with! And finally, thank YOU for being with me along this whole journey. From shooting vids in my bedroom to a magazine cover, my one piece of advice for you is this: never stop believing in yourself and keep following your passion. It’s going to work out just fine.
