Body Slang Vocabulary

Just a quickie note before we get started: this post is NOT meant to make fun of people who are overweight nor is it meant to conjure negativity towards your body. It is simply a dictionary of body slang terms that people use to describe parts of their body that they don’t like. I had no idea what saddlebags were and what the diff between love handles and muffintops were until you guys actually told me a while back 😛

So here is a complete list of body slang terms for your reference as told by!


Bingo wings: A flabby upper arm that jiggles when you raise it and move it around, not unlike the arm of an overweight senior citizen who spends all her free time frantically waving her hand at the bingo table.

Cankles: The absence of a defined ankle on a person – whereby the calf of the leg merges directly into the foot. The calf appears to replace the ankle – hence the term “cankle”.

Double chin: The roll of fat under a fat person’s chin; it sort of looks like a second chin.

Love handles: referring to the deposit of fat on the sides of your lower waist.

Man Boobs or “Moobs”: A combination of the words “man” and “boobs.” This is what happens when fat gathers in a male’s chest area, and gives him the appearance of having breasts.


Muffintop: The belly/hip spillage over the top of the jeans, forming a muffintop. Usually in reference to females.

Pooch: The fat that puffs ut from under the belly button. Annoying and oh-so-pokeable.

Saddlebags: Excess fat around the outer hips and thighs. Resembles the saddlebags that horses carry on the sides of their belly during travel.

Spare tire/Donut: A bulge of fat all around the circumference of the waist. Not to be confused with a muffintop which only refers to the side and front spillage of fat over the pants.

Thunder Thighs: A pejorative term for a person with large thighs, alluding to the sound of thighs hitting against each other.

Remember, know these terms to know them but if you use them, be cautious! It can be comical to some but may feel degrading to others!

    I, too, am disappointed by this post. These are all hurtful terms that in my opinion should be in no one’s vocabulary, whether describing others or ourselves. I should think as an influential fitness “guru” you would be incredibly mindful about the quality of material you post. Somehow I don’t understand how you thought someone might “learn something new”. Do you truly think people need to know these terms? Use them on your own all you like but given your position you should know better than to post such (for lack of a better word) junk.

    I agree with Katie- i think this sort of post really does nothing for body dysmorphia or peoples “spot obsessions” – we are all built differently , and regardless of fitness level or weight some of these dissected body parts are just plain genetic attributes. The body serves us as a whole- and the body is not an apology to be dissected. I pity the impressionable who will be reading this post and examining their bodies and dissecting it according to a short sighted classification system based on jibes. And it makes me shudder to think of the number of young girls still learning about their bodies (and all aspects including nurturing) who are soaking up these subtle jibes and negative self speak. 🙁

    Oh, and forgot to mention. Who uses a few of these terms all the time? People who sew! When we use body slang, we quickly know exactly what issues other sewers are facing and can recommend fitting and pattern solutions. For example, there are a number of people who make reference to their own “clown butts.” Others with self-admitted clown butts generously offer their help. I think they use the “clown butt alteration”–Yes, they do! I just googled it. It’s not an alteration I use myself, but I’ve seen several mention it.

    I did learn something today. I have never heard the term “bingo wings”, however, if someone mentioned “bat wings” then I’d know what they were talking about. It’s the same thing.

    Also, I’ve heard the term “man boobs” but not “moobs”.

    What was missed is that little deposit of fat near the crease of the front armpit. Even at my fittest and thin moments, it’s still there. What do people call that? When I make my own tops, I alter the front armhole to cover up that small bit of pooch. It’s only there when my arms are down by my sides, but I can’t walk around with my arms up or on my hips all day now can I? 🙂 That’s a quick but impractical solution lol!

    lol, moobs. I never heard of that one before. What about foopa? The fat pouch that is below the lower abs/sort of where the uterus would be? It’s sort of lose and like a fat fanny pack.

    Hey Cassie, I just started doing your videos yesterday and I already LOVE THEM!!!! Though I have a feeling I’m gonna be sore for a little while 😛 Anyway, my question is, do all your videos include a warm-up, or is it necessary to do one beforehand?

      I agree! I’m not offended, but I’m really questioning why someone thought this was a good idea. It comes across like, “I’m naturally thin, so I clearly wouldn’t know what a ‘bingo wing’ is!”
      I love Blogilates and I’m not trying to be a hater, but these kinds of posts get a big ol’ eye roll from me.

        Hey Katie! Sorry you got an eye roll. I am not naturally thin, I actually have to work very hard and restrict foods I eat. Either way, I understand what you’re saying. Not the usual positive inspirational blogilates type post but it was something I googled yesterday and thought some of you might learn something new.

          One thing that I like about Blogilates is that it’s about getting the body you want without negativity! If your usual posts are about body positivity, I’m not sure why you would want to swing the other way. Blogilates has such an amazing community of people of all shapes and sizes, I’m just not sure why anyone would want to break themselves (or someone else) down into components like “cankles” or “muffintops.”
          Just my two cents.

    Funnily enough, I researched more on about Love Handles to find out what exactly it is and I wondered if I have it. Because my boyfriend said that I have love handles and would like for me to get rid of it but it is very hard! Unfortunately, I do have love handles, but its very small, I am 5 foot 4 inches and my weight is 120 pounds with 21% body fat. So help! How to get rid of the love handles quickly?

      If you’re happy with your body, then you shouldn’t let your boyfriend dictate how you look. If YOU want the love handles gone, go for it! But YOUR body is not HIS to sculpt at will.
