Spontaneity and Victory | Day 10 of 90

Yesterday was such an unexpectedly fun day! I started off my Saturday morning by taking an 8 AM circuit training class while Sam went on a local hike with Sir George. I thought it was just going to be a regular day so I went grocery shopping and bought a ton of ingredients to make tacos, baba ganoush, and keto blueberry smoothies. I thought we were just gonna go home after that so I could cook and blog.

But then Sam said, “Want to go to Jackelyn’s to eat breakfast at a cool diner and then play Settlers of Catan after!?” I was a little thrown off by his spontaneity…but then I was like YES I DO!!!!

So we quickly stopped by the house to put all the groceries in the fridge and then we headed out to Jackelyn and Nick’s place, which unfortunately is like 40-45 min away even on a Saturday morning. That’s LA for you. We used to live so close, so hangouts and dinners were super convenient, but then…

Last summer Sam and I found our dream house! 🙂

Every time we’re at home I seriously feel like I am actually AT HOME. I feel so relaxed. I feel so happy. And I feel so removed from the craziness of LA. We are no longer in the city – city, so getting into “LA Proper” as they call it means we have to suffer through the traffic. As much as I HATE, like absolutely HATE driving into the city, the trade off is worth it. Having to not pay for parking meters all the time and being able to actually drive up to a grocery store and walk in without having to push a button to get a parking pass is so incredibly amazing. I love the suburbs life. But I do miss being close to my sister!

Anyway after the drive, we met up with Jackelyn and Nick at a local diner and it was so cute! I felt like we were stepping back into the 50s or something. I got an omelette with mushrooms, spinach, onions, and sausage. I traded the house potatoes and toast for a side salad. I also asked for fresh salsa in place of the ketchup.

Oh and before I forget, here is my Fit Journal entry:

The page got wet from the frozen veggies I tossed on top of it yesterday!

After brunch, as we were walking back to Jackelyn and Nick’s place, something green caught my eye. I saw this huge plush avocado in the window! It was the BIGGEST avocado I have ever seen in my entire life. So I forced everyone to go inside the shop so I could get a closer look at the avocado. I mean…

LOOK AT THIS AVOCADO!!!

I kid you not, I was going to buy this plush avocado for myself – ya know, cuz I work hard and that’s how I wanna spend my money! But then, I looked at the tag and…

The avocado was $250.

$250!!??!???

WHAT!????

No thanks.

So I took some pics and boomerangs for Instagram and then we left 😉

So even though we had just eaten, Jackelyn and I kinda have bottomless pits for stomachs so we felt like we wanted to have smoothies. So went into Lassens and I got myself the blueberry keto smoothie and Jackelyn got the Paleo peach.

OK, so for those of you who are reading my blog post yesterday, remember that when I was ending the post I told you that I might win Settlers of Catan?

Well, I need to back this up and say that I absolutely suck at Settlers of Catan and really basically any “board game”. Jackelyn and Sam always win. I ALWAYS lose. Somehow, I am cursed with the worst rolls on my die and quite possibly not the best strategy :). Anyway, yesterday Nick had been ahead the entire game (he made sure everyone knew that too lol) and I wasn’t doing too bad myself. So get this – just before Nick was about to win the entire game, I pulled out a couple ninja moves and swooped in last minute to claim VICTORY!!!!!!

And you guys! The craziest thing is that I was playing Settlers of Catan while actually blogging on my computer. LOL.

After the game all four of us decided to get massages. I usually never stray from my usual masseuse but whatever. Saturdays are for spontaneity right?

I’m so glad I did it because my massage actually ended up being so good! I always get myself a deep tissue. And when I say deep, I mean I need you to go REALLY DEEP. As in…I need you to dig your elbow into my skin and drag it all the way down the length of my back. It doesn’t matter how much I’m grimacing, the slow torture brings me into total bliss.

Self care checked off for the week!

After massages, we all stopped by a new boba shop that apparently makes their boba fresh by hand. Sam ordered a Matcha shake and it looked so delicious. Normally I would have wanted a sip (I mean matcha milkshakes are my ultimate YOLO), but honestly guys, I’ve been feeling so solid with my 90 day journey that I wasn’t even tempted to try any! Big victory for me!!

Even though I know that one sip wouldn’t have affected me, I went back to the “why” behind why I am doing this 90 day journey. A big part of it is building my mental strength – to not be swayed but what others are doing or saying or in this case, eating. I honestly can feel myself getting physically and mentally stronger as I get into week two of this 90 day journey. And it feels so empowering.

But who said you can’t eat fun foods on keto! (Well, lazy keto in my case.) Look what I found!

An ice cream with only 5 g of net carbs??? Hmmm. I had to buy it.

By the way for those of you who are curious how you should be calculating net carbs this is how you do it:

Net carbs = total carbs – fiber – 1/2 (sugar alcohols)

I read that low carbers typically subtract 100% of sugar alcohols but keto-ers subtract 1/2 to be safe. So I did half!

The reason why you can subtract fiber and sugar alcohols is because they are supposed to be indigestible carbs.

So how did it taste?

Surprisingly REALLY GOOD!!!! Omg I was blown away. It was creamy and the sweetness didn’t taste fake. I had never seen the ice cream brand Rebel before, but it’s legit guys. They had a few other flavors like strawberry, chocolate, and peanut butter too. I’ll need to try it next time!

For dinner, I cooked up some cauliflower risotto. This pack came with asparagus and mushrooms.

I also made myself some chicken drumsticks and poured a ton of sriracha all over everything…but guess what guys? It’s not your normal sriracha!

My friend Michelle of the blog Nom Nom Paleo came out with a better-for-you sriracha!

Check out the ingredients side by side:

First off, you can see that the Nom Nom Paleo Sriracha is sweetened with organic date syrup whereas the regular one uses sugar. Plus it lists tomato, garlic and apple cider vinegar as ingredients – things I actually understand!

So was it good? I was hesitant, because I’ve tried the Trader Joes sriracha and that stuff is no bueno.

Guys, the Nom Nom Paleo sriracha is VERY GOOD. It tastes nearly identical to the “real” sriracha, but in a weird way, almost better? Maybe it’s sweeter. I am not sure. But it is so good.

I think you can find it at your local Whole Foods! Let me know if you end up trying it!

I also had a side salad with some Tessamae‘s lemon pepper dressing. This dressing is great if you’re on Whole30. There’s never any dairy or added sugars in it.

Can’t wait to write to you again tomorrow! Hope you’re having a great weekend.

I like the spontaneity here! It’s refreshing to change your routine even just a bit. Even for only an hour.
That lunch looks goood! The avocado is ridiculously pricey.
I actually thought you were good at board games. I’m really glad you keep remembering your whys no matter what. Congrats on all your victories! 🙂 By the look of it, I thought the vanilla ice cream would be bland. It’s good to know about the sugar alcohol by the way. I like Michelle’s blog design and yes, it’s so much better when you actually understand the ingredients. Something that stuck with me ever since a YouTuber said it (which I follow pretty often) is “if you don’t understand one of the ingredients, then your stomach won’t either” – I find it to make a lot of sense

  3. I hate it when my friends try to make excuses for me to break my goals/rules. That’s not what I need to hear. I need to be reminded of my why, and how it’s making me a stronger mentally and physically person!

That’s how I wanna spend my weekends! Love ya, Cassey! 🙂

That all looks so delicious and like it would just make your body feel good to eat it! Have you ever tried skyr? It’s an Icelandic yogurt that I switched to from Greek yogurt a couple years ago. It’s a little bit higher in protein than Greek yogurt, and because of the process used to make it it’s lactose and fat free (although some brands do sell a 4% ‘skyr’ where I shop). It’s also a little bit more tart tasting than other yogurts and is ridiculously thick and velvety! It’s totally worth a try if you can find some, definitely one of my favorite foods!

  10. Love it! I’ve gotta try the not-eating-when-others-eating and I’m not hungry thing. I’d probably save a bundle of calories.

Also, the fish sauce makes that nomnom sauce better. Fish sauce makes LOTs of things better (pad thai for instance).

I have found you by looking up butt exercises on YouTube and yours popped up and from the beginning of the brutal booty workout I just fell in love with your energy and your driven personality. I’m not really good with following people and maybe even idolizing them lol i have 3 kids and work a lot so on my free time I…sleep lol but I do take time to self care when i can. I clicked on your plush avocado picture just now and here I am reading your blog and smiling because you’re just so damn COOL. I love how real you are and you write things like “cuz” lol you are honest with your viewers and yourself and what more can someone like me ask for? I need help in getting fit and getting the will power to stay in a fitness healthy life style. I’m 5’1 130 lbs. anyways thank you very much for being you. Everyone in your life is lucky to have a friend or family member like you. -Eva from Tampa fl.

Love what you’re saying: don’t get sway by what others are eating and doing -> Stick with your plan and smash your goals! Thanks for the motivation 🙂

As much as I love reading your journey… sugar from dates is still sugar. The body can’t differenciate between the natural sugar and added sugar. The “unkown” ingredients are basically “scientific” names for some ingredients, for example, vitamin C is always listed as ascorbic acid.
Please don’t take this personally, as a scientist myself I try to make people understand that natural or organic are not better just because they are natural or organic. They can be better or worse depending on the case and the amount you eat. As I always say, urianium is natural! And poisonous plants too!

Oh that sounds like such a fun day!! 😁 I worked and worked and worked after the normal Saturday errands of groceries etc. But I did end up watching some fun stuff with my family so I still got a little bit of family time. And then we went to exercise at night. ❤️

Been following the blog every day and have been keeping up with my diet since you started, as a way to stay motivated. No weigh ins for me though – I refuse! I don’t really lose weight in #’s but I’ve noticed a difference in my body. I look less swollen and bloated. My arms look more toned. I’ve been following the Blogilates calendar and adding a slow 1.5-2 mile walk in the evenings, and on occasion, I’ll throw in an extra workout routine – a dance workout, weight lifting, whatever I’m feeling. I’m more active and eating a LOT of fruit. Not craving sugar at all because of it and I look forward to vegetables. Not craving any proteins at all either- all I want is fruit. I’ve read once that it’s not a good idea to eat fruit when you’re trying to slim down – but I’ve been regular finally. 💩💩💩 And I’m happy. I feel good!

Happy for ya, Cassey. It’s nice to see you fill in the happy bubbles on the fit journal. 🙂

    1. blogilates says:

The happy bubbles. Yes. I am grateful that I get to fill those in.

I have never had a massage in my life but I’m getting one for my birthday next month and I’m so excited! I think I want deep tissue because it sounds like they really get in there and that sounds lovely.

    1. blogilates says:

OMG you need to get a massage! Happy early bday!

  23. MadelineHou says:

I’m so glad you had fun, this whole day sounds awesome!! A day out with friends and family is the best.
These daily blogs are awesome to read, glad you’re feeling great :>

I am glad you’re enjoying the read!

My son would be putting that huge avocado in my shopping cart when I wasn’t looking or would walk around the store with it. He’s funny.

  25. Mandy says:

I love following your journey! I started and completed your 28 day beginner work out and love every minute! I have had a hard time sticking to anything but this was easy for me! Unfortunately on the last day I suffered an injury and am stuck to just light stretches for at least a week! Any recommendations on injury stretching? Hopefully everything will be better so I can start the September calendar!

  26. Rahshemah says:

Hi. Sounds like a fun day. On my road to get healthy and reclaim my body the process is very slow. One of my problems is eating junk food. Also I don’t have my own kitchen. I am living in a room mate situation. Taking one day at a time. Next 4vdays I will be at the jersey shore. I vow, water, water clean, clean eating all 4 days.

  27. Sarah says:

    (1) I LOVE SETTLERS OF CATAN hahaha. (2) I’m so happy for you, Cassey! It sounds like you are killing your goals so far and are doing things in a way that’s healthy and great for you. I admire that so much. I’m on a very different type of journey: trying to gain weight healthily because I’m pregnant. It’s a huge challenge mentally to love your body even as it’s changing so much–you know it’s for the best reason ever, but it’s still hard. So while my day-to-day looks very different from yours, I’m drawing so much inspiration from your attitude and drive as I work toward my own goals. I’ve loved you and all things Blogilates since I found you way back in college (Muffintop Meltdown baby!) and hope this 90-Day Challenge just goes amazingly for you. All the love and good vibes in the world coming at you from Utah! –Sarah
