Experimental Oatmeal Crust Pizza

Hello hello!

Writing this post in a brand new interface is almost like moving into a new home. It’s kinda weird. And I kinda feel squirmish. But I kinda like it. Well I better get used to it because this is the new home!

Did you notice the background? I chose a pretty fall theme with Autumn-y colors. I am thinking of changing backgrounds every season! What do you think? Wouldn’t that be cool!!! Snowmen for winter and colorful flowers for spring! I  am already getting excited!

Also, I am so happy that you’re loving the Body Language Giveaway! I hope everyone has signed up. Remember you have until Monday Oct 10, 2011 at 11:59PM to “like, like, and comment.”

Anyway, onto a new recipe!!! WHOO-HOO! Okay so this was totally experimental and it needs some work but I was surprised that it even turned out!!! I want you to try it, tweak it, and tell me how yours turned out.

INGREDIENTS

– Oatmeal Crust Toppings:

– 1 cup dried oats (instant or rolled ok)

– 1/2 cup egg whites (you can also use 2 whole eggs)

– 1 TBS ground flax seed

– 1/4 to 1/2 cup water (approximate)

Mexican Pizza Toppings:

– a handful of almond cheese (you can get this in the vegetarian section at Whole Foods)

– 1/2 cup mango salsa

– some Gimmelean vegetarian sausage bits

– 2 roma tomatoes sliced thinly

– some purple onion

DIRECTIONS
  1. Mix crust ingredients in a bowl and let sit for 5 min.
  2. Pour onto a pan on medium heat. Spray with some PAM or olive oil.
  3. Let it harden. If possible, try to flip over.
  4. Then place your mango salsa on top, the cheese, the tomatoes, and then the sausage.
  5. Put the heat on low and cover with a top.
  6. Let sit for a few minutes until cheese melts.
  7. Then slide out of the pan onto a plate or serving tray. Pretty easy.

Cutting into it for the first time!

“Can you please stop taking pictures, we’re hungry.” Ok.

You’re done! That’s it. I used salsa because I ran out of marina. You also don’t have to use these vegetarian ingredients. I was just trying to use up stuff laying around so that’s what I came up with. I think the crust needs some tweaking but it worked! I wanted it to be harder and crispier, so maybe less water next time? Either way, I had a couple friends over and they thought it tasted good. Or at least that’s what they told me…

Flax Eggs instead. You can make this with flax eggs. 1tbsp of ground flax to 3 tbsp of water. It won’t be as wet. Also put the oven on low and dry or dehydrate the crust first. Then add toppings. Hope this helps.

This is delicious! It tastes just as good as normal pizza but you can enjoy it more because you know you’re being healthy! Thanks Cassey 🙂

Hey Cassey! I recently made this recipe but I made a regular pizza with marinara sauce, mozzarella, green bell pepper and onion. It came out fairly good but cooking the vegetables took a while to cook. The only problem was that the crust tasted bland in comparison to the toppings. Maybe next time I’ll mix some oregano, basil or garlic with the oatmeal. Otherwise this was a great clean pizza crust recipe!

hey cassie, i wouldn’t recommend cooking/heating flax seeds because they have a kind of good fatty acid- linoleic acid which is easily oxidated ( can lead to oxygen radicals = not good) . thats why it is better/recommended to eat them without applying any heat ( and preferrably storing them in a cold dark place) hope this helps !

Just made your pizza crust and it was amazing. I started it on top of the stove then flipped it onto a cookie sheet and added my toppings, then put it in the oven to crisp up the bottom and bake the toppings. I found it to have
a really nice earthy taste, even better then regular pizza crusts!! Thanks for the recipe.

I have been planning to make this and I just did for lunch! I didn’t have flax seed so I used a tablespoon of oil. It looks good and it tastes delicious!! The crust didn’t come out as thin and as hard as I wanted it to but there is always next time!

Thanks Cassey for sharing this with us!

I just came upon this recipe at a time that I need it the most! My family decided to order pizza today (friday night), and I can make this and not feel left out of the dinner because of my healthy choices 🙂 and I happen to have all the ingredients, so its perfect! yay i dont have to run (literally run, its what I do) to the grocery store! I guess that means I will have to get my workout in after dinner…oh well 🙂 Im LOVING the calf challenge! My calfs are SOOO much more *firm* then they were before!

Just tried this and it turned out great!!! I used coconut oil in the pan and also added hemp seeds to the mix. Instead of making a meat or veggie pizza, I just broke off a piece and put honey on it. Fantastic! I will be making this more often, with various toppings. Great post Cassey!

could i make this crust without the flax seed? i ran out!!

    1. Jen says:

You could try a tablespoon of oil like coconut oil. Or even chia seeds. Or just omit and see what happens! This looks great. Ive never tried it with oatmeal but have used gluten free flours like brown rice or quinoa. I also add just a teaspoon of baking powder (you can buy GF) to help it rise and not stick. I’ve made it in the oven. Will have to try the micro method!
