It’s National Donut Day! Only in America right?

“National Doughnut Day originated with the The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 as a salute to the women who served doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War I.” – CNN

The Salvation army is also giving away their original donut recipe, courtesy of the Salvation Army Blog. I’ll paste it right here, but I suggest you read on and try the baked donut hole recipe instead.


Yield: 4 doz. doughnuts

– 5 C flour

– 2 C sugar

– 5 tsp. baking powder

– 1 ‘saltspoon’ salt

– 2 eggs

 – 1 3/4 C milk

– 1 T lard


1. Combine all ingredients (except for lard) to make dough. Thoroughly knead dough, roll smooth, and cut into rings that are less than 1/4 inch thick. (When finding items to cut out doughnut circles, be creative! Salvation Army doughnut girls used whatever they could find, from baking powder cans to coffee percolator tubes.)

2. Drop the rings into the lard, making sure the fat is hot enough to brown the doughnuts gradually.

3. Turn the doughnuts slowly several times. When browned, remove doughnuts and allow excess fat to drip off.

4. Dust with powdered sugar. Let cool and enjoy.

Now, the following recipe provided by The Frugal Girl isn’t Blogilates approved healthy BUT it IS healthiER than your Krispy Kreme. Or if you’re not up for baking, head to your local Krispy Kreme for a free one or stop by Dunkin Donuts for a free donut with purchase of drink.


Yield: 36 holes

– 2 tablespoons oil or melted butter

 – 1/2 cup sugar

– 1 egg

 – 1 teaspoon vanilla

– 2/3 cup milk

– 2 cups all purpose flour

– 1 tablespoon baking powder

– 1/4 teaspoon salt

– 3-4 tablespoons butter, melted

– 1/2 cup sugar

– 2 teaspoons cinnamon


1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. Mix oil and sugar; beat in egg. Add vanilla and milk, and stir until combined.

3. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Add to wet ingredients and stir gently, just until combined. (a few lumps should remain).

4. Fill mini muffin tins 2/3 full with batter. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

5. Combine sugar and cinnamon. Dip each muffin/doughnut into the melted butter and then roll in the cinnamon sugar.

    It looks delicious!! ¿How many calories more or less???By the way, could you do more new healthy recipes?¿? I love them!!! And could you also give options for the ingredients? It’s because here in Spain, its very difficult to find some of them or maybe they don’t exist. .

    I found making these easy and fun; and just a tip: if you find the dough too sticky to deal with when you are done putting the ingredients together, just put some flour on your hands to help roll it into balls if that is your aim.
