We lost over 31,000 pounds! #Blogilatesbet Dietbet Recap

biggest dietbet game

Hey POPsters!

I just wanted to take a moment to recap the whole Dietbet experience from June. First of all I want to congratulate every single player in the game for betting on your own success. It was scary thing for me to do too. But over 5,700 of us got together and put $149,700 in the pot to say “Hey! This is my month. Let’s take control of our lives! And let’s do it together!” It took us one month of hard training and clean eating, but as a team we lost nearly 32,000 lbs (with the avg. pounds lost per person around 5-6 lbs)! It was the LARGEST GAME EVER in the history of Dietbet!

Going into this, I know some of you were skeptical of this whole scale thing. So to make sure that I wasn’t just doing this for pure weight loss, but fat loss, I bought myself a body fat percentage calculator! Let’s take a look at what happened. I started out at 126.8 lbs and 21.5% body fat at the beginning of June.

Here’s me going…”Well, here goes everything!”

20130708-001724.jpg

I had already been working out extra hard for 5 days since the beginning of the month, so I don’t know what my body fat was but this was my starting body fat percent on July 5th: 21.5%.

6 days a week I did all kinds of POP HIITs in addition to teaching my POP Pilates classes 2x a week. In fact, it was the extra hard workouts from June that inspired me to share with you my intense gym workouts for the #thisisMYJULY calendar. You should check out POP HIIT 1 and POP HIIT 2 if you haven’t already! This month I am releasing 9 of my personal routines. Watch out for 3 and 4 coming Tues and Thursday!   After a month of working out HARD CORE and eating clean (lots of veggies, lean protein, and water), not only did I end up weighing 120.6 lbs…

20130708-001703.jpg

My body fat went down!

20130708-001716.jpg

18.3%! Yay! I was so happy to see this number go down every week. You know, a lower weight and body fat % are not the ultimate goals for me. They never are. Getting fitter and STRONGER are. To me, losing weight is like making money. You should never focus on it or else it will make the whole journey so excruciating and passionless. If you were at work and were equating every minute of your day to how many dollars you were making every minute, you’d drive youself INSANE. Plus if you focused on $$$ all day long, how could you focus on how good you were doing your job? Instead, refocus. Figure out how to get better at your work and then you’ll get promoted. You’ll end up making more $ as a RESULT!! See what I am trying to say? Stop trying to figure out how to lose weight fast and stop being fixated on the number on the scale. Instead, focus on how to train your best and your hardest. Focus on having fun cooking clean. The pounds and the body fat will melt off as a RESULT. That’s what I did.

Here is a chart from the American Council of Exercise (ACE) on what body fat percentages are healthy for the average person based on gender and age. Do not confuse this with BMI which takes into account your weight and  height…and to me…is not a very helpful number.ACE body fat percentage chart

According to this chart, I am in the “athlete” level which is pretty cool! I will continue working hard this month too because I have an important shoot in August. I think Dietbet was a perfect kickstart to get me revved up for the craziness of summer! The whole community of POPsters training hard all over the world really motivated me to work my butt off even more! I really felt your energy on the Blogilates Dietbet page. The feed was constantly being updated with inspirational posts and pics to help drive others to reach their best success.

What I really liked about the Dietbet was that there was no one “Biggest Loser”. Everyone who participated won. Whether or not you reached your 4% weight loss goal, you probably were headed towards the right direction anyway. I liked that you were competing against yourself, not your friends. This helped build community. In fact, I decided to give out prizes to special POPsters who really helped keep the spirit alive. Here are some special awards I’d like to give out:

1. Most Valuable Player: Emmy

The MVP is the person who helped invite the most friends into the game!

2. Most Liked Player: Hanna

Miss Congeniality!

3. Most Liked Comment: Jyothi

Pretty self explanatory.

Each of the above Players gets a $100 gift certificate to ShopBlogilates.com!

beastin tank

Thank you so much for keeping everyone happy and motivated all month long girls! Also…this wasn’t one of the original awards that was supposed to be given out, but after checking out how hard Sunshine worked to make sure everyone felt appreciated for their hard work…I decided that she should be rewarded too! So here’s our…

4. Most Generous Liker: Sunshine!

Emmy, Hanna, Jyothi, and Sunshine please email me at POPsterPost@gmail.com to claim your gift cert! And thank you once again for being awesome 🙂

I saw that a lot of POPsters wanted to keep the momentum up and do another Dietbet! I have not decided if I will do another one, but if there is enough interest, we may do an August one for anyone that wants the extra motivation for summer’s end! I am so proud of everyone who trained beast style last month. Your enthusiasm for healthy living always energizes me!

Much love and here’s to another week of CRAZINESS!!! Let’s KILL IT!

<3 Cassey

I cannot even believe the transformation. I have tried to lose weight many times in the past. Some things were somewhat successful, but it just seemed that I kept hitting a brick wall over the last year or so. I was pretty desperate by the time I made the choice to try this program what helped me lose 21 pounds in about 6 weeks

I just want to say that I may not have lost the 4% body weight during the challenge, but I did lose a little over 1% of my body fat which is a huge accomplishment for me because my current medication actually causes me to store fat.

  8. Sofja says:

  12. Amanda H says:

Thanks to introducing me to DietBet Cassey! I was honestly too scared of failure and publicly declaring a commitment to lose weight to join your game but missing out on the biggest DietBet ever motivated me to finally join a game. Wrote about it on my blog here: http://www.eathardworkhard.blogspot.com

Am also following your calendar for the first time. It is kicking my butt and definitely helping me reach my goal 🙂

  13. Sody says:

Thanks a lot Cassey! For me it was a bit stressful to focus on the scale but as you said maybe I should focus more on having fun while working out and eating healthy. Anyway I did hit my goal weight on time to win 🙂 and with the money that I won I think I’ll be buying that body fat percentage calculator! I has really good reviews and it’s not as expensive as I thought.

  14. Lauren M says:

Please do another dietbet in August! Dietbet & blogilates combo is soo motivating!

  15. Jodie says:

I really enjoyed DietBet! I actually didn’t win as I still had 1.2 lbs left to go, but I DID lose 4 lbs overall and I loved all the community support. I maaay do one again some time in the future (or right before school starts up again?) but for now I just want to focus on eating, workouts and not looking at the scale.

What I would REALLY love is a maintenance DietBet. I have a cycle of losing 5-10lbs, then gaining it back, then losing it again. I’m trying to work on why I often gain it back (specifically, I’ve realized I have an all-or-nothing attitude to health and will completely self-destruct when I hit a few obstacles) but it would be nice to have support for those are maintaining too.

  16. Zoe says:

Would LOVE to do another dietbet! I didn’t reach my goal but I’m on my way there!

  17. expattoexfat says:

I missed my goal by one pound with this dietbet, but thanks so much for running it, Cassey! I would love to do an August dietbet!

  18. Unikarm says:

This is so inspirational to me. i can’t believe you got so much muscle tone in one month!! WOW
also i just can’t help thinking (sorry). who won the bet? who got the 149,700 $$$ or is that even how it works? where did the money go?
it’s obvious i wasn’t part of the bet, but congrats to all of you <3 i really need to get my but in gear. i want muscle!!

  19. Martina says:

Hey! off topic but I cannot check social network right now. Any news for today’s POP HIIT? Is it gonna come out soon?? Thx.

  20. Kat says:

    Hey Cassey!
I followed the calendar and worked my hardest, but I didn’t see any changes in my body. I am only 5 feet tall even, and I’m on average 106 pounds. I’m confused as to why I saw no change even after eating clean and working out! Can you help me find out why? And are there any POPsters out there who might know?

  21. Tina says:

The June Dietbet was one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve always told myself I need to lose weight and, more importantly, get stronger. I gained a lot of weight and lost a lot of strength after my pregnancy. It took almost a year for me to lose the baby weight on my own (trained for a 10k), but I was still “overweight”. The number on the scale never bothered me too much. I knew it needed to be in a healthier range, but I was more concerned about getting strong again. I kept setting little goals for myself, but I guess they were a little too cushy and lenient. The Dietbet really kicked my butt into gear because it really forced me to focus and get down to business. The best part was really the community. There was such support and positivity. Though the amount of money you won depended on others not meeting their goal, everyone was SO supportive and wonderful and encouraging. It kept me motivated all month long. I ended up losing 10 lbs, well over my 4% goal weight, and dropping 2 dress sizes (8 to 4). Most importantly, I feel amazing. I feel so much stronger. I can do push ups again (not the “girly” ones) and sit ups! I have no problem carrying my 30-lb son up the 3 flights of stairs up to our apartment… with my arms full of other stuff. I am now in a healthy weight range and feel so much better about myself. My energy level is higher, my skin is clearer, and I’m not stopping here. Though the Dietbet is over, my life isn’t over yet. This is a change for life. I’d happily do another Dietbet challenge if only just to be interactive and part of the awesome Popster community cheering others on. I’m a mom of a 2 year-old and work a full time job. I don’t have a gym membership and I live in a one-bedroom apartment. I didn’t do any crash diets or cleanses. I didn’t take any diet pills or do any gimickey shakes. All it takes is motivation and work. I ate clean and exercised most days of the week. If I can do it, anyone really can do it. I’m really shocked at my results, and it really proves that hard work does pay off.

  22. Rebecca says:

Cassey, do you know the healthy body fat percentages for women who are fourteen?

  23. Alex says:

Would love to participate in the August one! My head wasn’t in the game for this one..

  24. joC says:

Congrats everyone!! I’m so happy I lost 7lbs but I’m still overweight hehe. I’m still working on it! anddddd I would join the dietbet in August !!! Count me in!! =D Thanks sooo much Cassey!!

  25. bridget says:

Hi, I got the bag and wallet that I ordered. Wow very gorgeous!!! I bought the DVD and plan on doing it tonight! FUN!!!!!! 🙂 I would love a August forever

  26. Kayleigh says:

This is awesome! Congrats to you and everyone who participated. I did not participate, however if there is another chance in the future.

  27. Lynn says:

Congrats to all winners of DietBet! I didn’t participate, but I would love to if there is another event like this. You’re such an inspiration Cassey!

  28. Amy M. says:

I have been having a problem losing weight after a month of starting Blogilates and eating clean. I am wondering how the body fat calculator you got works. I also think me going from exercising 2x a day to 1x has made me lose less weight, but I don’t really have a choice.

    1. teilzeitDAU says:

      Hey Amy
Don’t feel discouraged. It’s normal that the rate at which you lose weight (or hopefully fat!) decreases after the first few weeks (people usually lose a lot of water weight during the first few days/weeks). Also, fat loss isn’t usually happening in a linear fashion. There are so many complicated mechanisms +hormonal things going on in our bodies that have impact on the rate at which we lose fat, so it’s perfectly normal that things slow down sometimes (and speed up again after).
I’d look at it this way: Who cares how slowly you’re losing fat as long as you ARE losing fat 🙂 it’s all about going in the right direction, no matter at what pace 🙂

Second: DO NOT beat yourself up for working out “only” 1x a day!!! seriously, 1x a day is more than most people would be able to do, so you’re actually doing a great job. And also, you absolutely want to make this whole fitness thing a way of life, i.e. something you can do for the rest of your life. And I don’t think working out more than 1x a day is something anyone could keep up in the long run (unless you’re a fitness pro and have no other job than that).
Double days are fine for a limited period of time (eg if you want to look good for a certain event etc) but it’s definitely not necessary in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or to lose fat. 🙂

bottom line: be proud of yourself, don’t worry too much and just keep going 🙂

  29. anne says:

Congrats Cassey! It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to lose body fat. You look great! You looked great before. And you were already in the excellent body fat % category before you started. I would like to say that I hope you don’t lose much more. Please understand I’m not being negative or a troll. I understand that you want to achieve the look you had after the bikini comp but you must remember as you said yourself that you achieved that body using tools that “are not necessarily healthy” which means that body was not “necessarily healthy”. You look great! You looked great before. Yes, you work in the fitness industry and yes your body does dictate your income but you have an unusually large following young girls who follow YOU and they don’t understand yet that no one looks like barbie, not even when unhealthy. All I am saying is I hope you stabilize where you are now, you look great and are still a healthy/great example to follow.

  30. Jayne says:

Cassey I still don’t understand why you thought you needed to lose 6 pounds in the first place. You are very tiny to begin with

    1. Callie says:

She said losing weight wasn’t her ultimate goal. She wanted to get fitter and stronger. She moved recently and said she had gained a bit of weight because of it. she fell off the wagon for a while (like we all do) so, I think the dietbet thing was more of a way for her to get back into it and inspire others to get heathier with her. She also mentioned an important shoot in August, i think dietbet was also a way for her to start getting prepared for it. You should also keep in mind that even tho she looks great to all of us, she felt she wasn’t the best she could be.

  31. Jenna F says:

How much did everyone get back after their initial $25? 🙂

  32. Congrats, Cassey! It takes a whole lot of strength, endurance, and dedication to achieve the results that you have. Thanks for keeping us up to date on your journey! Keep inspiring! 🙂

  33. Laury says:

I would -love- another DietBet in August. I was skeptical about keeping such guard over the scale for two months in a row, but having July off and starting again in August would be fantastic. It’s such great motivation.

  34. So cool! It’s unbelievable that you managed to reduce your fat percentage so quickly. You look amazing!

  35. Renee says:

Congrats to everyone’s success with the DietBet! I didn’t participate, but I most definitely will next time around if you ever do this again Cassey. You’re all such an inspiration.

Thanks for posting those body fat percentage stats Cassey. It’s very helpful to see. I have a scale that measures body fat/muscle percentage, but there are 2 settings on it (one for normal and one for athelete). I weigh myself using both settings to see what the difference is, and it is a pretty significant difference. What kind of scale do you use to weigh yourself/take your measurements? I’ve been using a HoMedics scale. Not sure if it’s the best one.

  36. Anja says:

Oh dear, that’s … great… and a great challenge. Have to go down 10% in body fat IF my scale is correct (which I doubt as I have no hand unit). Gna.Gna. Gna.

  37. Sophie says:

Could we have one in September instead please? It’s difficult for me to do this while I’m still living at home, but I’m moving out late August/early September. Also, the university I’ll be starting has a brilliant gym which, as a student, I’ll have discounted access to :3

  38. Christy says:

I would love to participate in a diet bet! I am down for August 🙂

  39. Vivien says:

Cassey how did you take that photo of you holding the body fat percentage calculator? You only have two hands!! Haha!

  40. Lizet says:

Those waffles look so good! What are they? Is there a recipe for them?

  41. Federica says:

    Who won the PopPilates DVDs?

Another DietBet in August would be perfect! *-*

  42. Elena says:

Congratulations to everybody who did this! Cassey, this month is my first month doing your workouts and I am loving them so much! I would love to do the dietbet too, so I can’t wait for the next one 🙂 Thank you so much for everything you do Cassey!
