Today was a rest day – much needed. Last week I didn’t do one rest day at all and it backfired. It was the day I went super intense – ran 2.2 miles to the gym to do a full body 1 hour lifting class. And then it was that night that I started bloating hard…and the bloat is still here! So, today’s rest felt good. I got to sleep in a bit, which I needed after the long nights of editing my beauty standards video.

I also got to catch up on work (I feel like I am always catching up on work! Ugh!) and it felt nice to check some huge things off my to do list. I finally got around to finishing up a super detailed inspiration packet for our POPFLEX shoot next week and sent it off to our photographer and our makeup artists!

Since I love you so very much, I want to give you guys a teeny itty bitty sneak peek…ready? Shhh don’t show anyone!

Omg. How cool are these looks!???? Have you seen HBO’s Euphoria yet? It’s really intense, but a good show. And Zendaya is such a great actress. The looks above are inspired from the show!

I’ll let your imagination run wild from there. It’s been a while since we’ve released a collection but it’s coming guys! This Fall. Any guesses what the theme of the collection will be?! Take your guesses in the comments!

Yesterday’s Recap:

My Fit Journal entry with cute lil Sir looking at me as I blog! Oh BTW, I have a question for fellow dog mommas out there. Lately Sir has been scratching at my legs and barking in a very high pitched manner whenever I am at the computer and not paying attention to him. He only stops when I pet him or scratch his chin. As soon as I stop and look at my phone or the computer for 1 second, he starts scratching me again! When I put him on my lap or on the desk, he stops barking and scratching, but then he gets fidgety and starts typing on my keyboard with his paws! Anyone know how I should address this? I mean obviously he wants attention, but what can I do to keep Sir interested when I have to get some work done? I wish there was a doggy board game he could play or a doggy TV show he could watch! Sometimes I feel so bad that dogs have nothing to do but to wait for us humans to give them attention :( I wish I could pet him all day!!

Anyway, started off the day with an upper body weight lifting workout. Still bloated.

When I made it to work, I started munching on some chili roasted pistachios! This is the last of it. So sad! I think I’ll take a break for a bit so I don’t start hating them. Plus my friend Drew Manning of Fit2Fat2Fit and author of Complete Keto, says that I should try to cut back on nuts and dairy if I want to see better results, so I will slowly start doing that. I had a great phone call with him yesterday and he’s super stoked that I am doing keto. He gave me some tips on what to do about my bloat (eat more salt, who knew!) and he guided me on what supplements to take to balance my electrolytes and calm my gut.

Because of my bloat, I haven’t been wanting to eat any food from home – in case something was contaminated. So I ordered a salad with chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickled cabbage. I was LOVING it until…I bit into the pickled cabbage and realized that it has probably been marinated in sugar vinegar! Oh well. I kept eating it anyway. I’m not entirely sure I was keto yesterday but it was DELICIOUS! Oops! ;P

I topped my salad with some Tessamae’s dressing. Habanero Ranch is SO GOOD. This dressing is totally Whole30 approved and perfect for keto too. You can get it at Ralphs or Whole Foods.

Post lunch, Sam surprised me with my fave Keto smoothie from Lassens! OMG!!! In the morning I had quietly mentioned that I felt like I needed a smoothie today and guess what!??? Around 3pm Sam left the office and came back to hand deliver this to me!!! OMG he is the best!!!! I love him so much! Plus my body really needed it. YUMMMMMMM.

I got home so late yesterday so I didn’t wanna have a huge meal. I made myself 3 small egg thin quesadillas with pico de gallo. I also ate some lox on the side to increase my salt intake.

Let’s talk about this salt thing real quick because I was confused too. Like what? Eat more salt? Haven’t we been told our whole lives to decrease our sodium intake because it’s unhealthy?

Drew told me that when you eat low-carb or keto, you end up producing a lot less insulin than normal – which is partially the reason why you end up losing weight and feeling like you have good, steady energy. However, having stable insulin alerts your kidneys to start excreting sodium, along with any extra water you were utilizing for carbohydrate stores.

That is why bloating typically goes down pretty drastically in the first 1-2 weeks of being on keto. But that’s mostly water weight loss FYI. He said that if you aren’t actually replenishing all the sodium that your kidneys are pumping out, you can end up with dehydration, headaches and fatigue. OMG – I HAD THIS!!!! My 2nd or 3rd week into keto, my mouth started getting super dry no matter how clear my pee was! I had headaches for 3 days straight, and there was a day I was so tired I had to take an impromptu rest day. I had the keto flu.

After dinner, I tried one this advanced probiotic from Complete Wellness that Drew sent to me to help with my gut issues. Probiotics, aka good bacteria, is necessary for proper digestion. I am hoping that by taking this, I am lining my GI tract with the good bacteria to keep bad bacteria from taking over – which I think is why I am so gassy and uncomfortable right now!

The strawberry flavor tastes so good! It tastes like actual candy. It is such a treat to have while on keto, or even off keto honestly! I could literally eat these sticks all day. It reminds me of pixy stix. Remember those form Halloween? I just rip off the top edge and pour the sugary powder onto my tongue and let it dissolve. Literally so good.

I hope I can get this bloat under control.

    This keto stuff sounds really unhealthy. It may be good for short- term weight loss, but it is not good for your heart. If your goal truly is to improve your health and not just lose weight, you need to lay off the bacon and other highly processed foods and definitely be careful not to over do it on sodium.

  • I just wondering your thoughts. It is not so easy to maintain everything perfectly.

    My mom has been doing keto for a little over a year and has had great results. I know she takes probiotics for her gut health. She also drinks a lot of water with electrolytes. I’ve even seen her sprinkle pink Himalayan salt into her water for the electrolytes as well! Might be worth a try!

    When I was doing keto, and my husband was on a low-carb diet, his trainer suggested an electrolyte pill called “salt stick caps – buffered electrolyte salts.” They helped a lot.

    I’m not a make-up girl but these looks are goooood!!!! I haven’t watched Euphoria. It seems really interesting, thought-provoking and looking at things in different perspectives is definitely something that I love doing but there would be too much triggers for me.
    I’m thinking glitters for the collection? Glow, glitter, popping, out-there. Maybe a new way of seeing and “wearing” beauty. You got me excited!!!
    In no way am I a dog mama, I never had dogs but maybe you could try to gradually stop paying attention to him? I don’t know, I immediately thought “oh maybe it’s because he’s used to being cuddled, getting attention; playing with you & the others” so if you can detach yourself from him just enough for him to be peacefully alone, it could work.

    I know what you mean about feeling sorry for your pup while you work! Unfortunately I think you just have to ignore him when he scratches until he learns that isn’t what you want (so sad, I know!)
    Does Sir get enough walks or exercise? Sometimes a really good doggie daycare is enough to expend their energy and poop them out so they’re content for the rest of the day. I know you’re really busy, but if he needs more stimulation, maybe have someone take him on a good long walk while you work? Then when he gets back from the walk maybe he’ll feel more content to lie down? Either way, I think you just have to ignore him when he scratches to discourage the behavior. If you haven’t done doggie training yet, it’s a great way to get your pup’s mind working and learn positive reinforcement. Good luck!

    My recommendations are to say “no” or “off” or make some verbal sound when he does something you don’t like. Then, ignore him. In other words, don’t REWARD the behavior.
    In terms of keeping him happy and occupied while mommy works, there are a lot of toys you can buy now that are designed to mentally challenge/entertain/stimulate your dog and like us they get BORED. Take little Georgie to the store and see what you find/what he likes. Also, marrow stuffed bones always kept my dogs entertained for HOURS. And, then there’s the obvious, which is play with him or take him on a long walk before you have to ignore him for awhile … He’s likely to take a nap! In terms of shows, my Lucy loved kids shows like Blues Clues and Dora, the Explorer, Finding Nemo, and Happy Feet. I’m sure a quick You Tube search would have doggie entertainment too. GOOD LUCK! Being a dog momma is hard sometimes… I’d rather pet Bono all day too. XOXO 💜

    For bored pups, I swear by Frosty Paws “ice cream” for dogs! It’s sold in the freezer aisle of a lot of grocery stores or they also have a website.

    Hey Cassey! Check out Cesar Milan (The Dog Whisperer) for some really good tips on dog behavior. I recommend just giving him a quick “shhh” and then ignoring him when he pesters you at your desk. Alternatively, try misting him with a water bottle. He’ll learn that when you’re at your desk, it’s your personal space and when you’re away from your desk it can be play time. He won’t hold a grudge or be afraid of you for setting boundaries (every relationship needs healthy boundaries.)

    Hi there! I know it’s hard and sad, but you should make Sir George understand that you don’t like what he does, so tell him ‘stop’ or ‘no’, whatever word you use, so it doesn’t become a habit every time he wants attention. To entertain him there are some videos on youtube that our dog loves, but what can be more effective is games involving food and treats. Searching for food using their nose makes them really tired and can be entertained for a while. Hope this helps :)

    Get a Kong or other puzzle toy to stuff with treats and keep Sir busy. It’s important for dogs to have mental exercise in addition to physical exercise! You can try a little bit of peanut butter inside and stick it in the freezer for a few hours before giving it to him, it will last longer!

    do you plan to continue Keto after the 90 day journey? And make it more a lifestyle change? Do you miss your banana pancakes? I have read your blog since the banana pancake days.

      Actually right now I am pretty satisfied! I don’t think I will be as strict as I am right now after 90 days but I guess it depends if I hit my goal or not! We will see. By that time, I will have created some pretty lasting habits with food.

        Do you think you will keep buying keepbup your blogging after the 90 days are up? I’m really loving reading these and look forward to it every day! Also the comment about a kong toy filled with frozen peanut butter/kibble is a great idea for Sir. We used to make dry food “mush” (dry regular food mixed with water until soft with some peanut butter or pumpkin mixed in, then stuffed in a kong and frozen , and my dog loved it, it would entertain him for hours!

    Dogs learn incredibly fast how to get us to do exactly what they want us to. I know it sounds harsh and your heart will be breaking – but the only way (in my experience) to get him to stop is to ignore him when he scratches you. If you pet him when he does, he learns that he gets a reward for being obnoxious, so he’ll continue doing it. Of course you have to spend time with him and play with him, but it’s absolutely okay to put him into his crate or bed for a while now and again. If you practice it enough he will stay there and calm down. Like little children dogs easily get too much stimulation. So like little children some dogs need to be told when it’s time for a nap.

    I think you should just ignore Sir George when he’s making a fuss. If you’re petting him and giving him attention when he’s barking/scratching, you’re encouraging that behaviour. So only give him attention when he’s not begging for it.

    Taking Sir George on a long walk and/or having a play session before going to work will burn off his energy and he should be able to calm down and sleep when you’re working. Also making dogs use their brains (by teaching new tricks etc.) really tires them out (some dogs just don’t tire out by just running around). If you want Sir George to have something to do during your day maybe consider buying some activation toys (for example there’s a ball that activates from time to time and rolls around on it’s own. I’ve been wanting to try that with my dog). But usually you don’t need to invest anything fancy, I mean a person below mentioned giving their dog a plastic bottle and yeah their a big hit with dogs I know :D

    Hi Cassey, thanks for all the blog posts :) My puppy loves playing with plastic water bottles (the disposable kind)! I give him one whenever I need to keep him busy for a while. It’s hard for him to hold one in his mouth so every time he tries to pick it up it’ll slip away and he can chase it around the room! But it can get pretty noisy LOL so you might need to keep Sir George in another room if you’re working. :)

    There actually is a thing called Dog TV. It’s extra on a package, maybe dish or direct tv, I can’t remember. I had a friend ya it to help calm him Great Dane down so it would stop literally going through walls and doors. Maybe YouTube has something similar??

      Similar to other commenters, I think extra walk/play time with Sir could help. For my high-energy dog-son I found it beneficial to have a bit of a schedule (which took some trial and error) where my partner and I made sure he got what we felt was the right amount of activity at about the same times each day. That way everyone had some balance and once in the groove it worked very well. Best of luck! I know your dog-mom instincts will tell you what is best! 🤗

    My dog does the saaaame thing! She wants all the attention to no end. The only thing I’ve found that helps are chewy toys she plays with herself with or when she’s with my parents, she plays with their dog! Maybe Sir George needs a buddy?

    Is it advisable to try vegan keto? I know it’s possible, but I don’t see a lot of people doing it so…idk! Just wondering your thoughts.

      I’ve been eating “mostly-vegan keto-lite” for about 9 months. I’d say its more of the way i eat versus a diet at this point I have fish or eggs 1-2x a week to appease my non-vegetarian husband and kids with “compromise dinners” and cottage cheese or greek yogurt as snacks to get my protein levels higher. I eat vegan otherwise. I eat more carbs than regular keto, in the form of veggies, beans, peanut butter (which i am addicted to…) and quinoa. At lunch and dinner I’ll have tofu or seitan with a giant serving of veggies and some fat like avocado, nuts, or olive oil. I tried to go all vegan, but couldn’t get my protein levels high enough without supplementing with greek yogurt or cottage cheese snacks. One can only tolerate so many vegan protein shakes!

      After doing this for 9 months, I dropped the last 5 lbs and lost 2% body fat. I’m now at my original goal of 20% body fat and 132lbs. I’m 5’9″ and 40 years old for reference. I would love to drop another 1-2% body fat and gain 1-2% in muscle and keep my weight the same, so that’s what my next 3-6 month goal is.

    I can’t wait for the thing dropping this fall! Also when my pupper does that I know it sounds mean but I say stop or you go in your kennel or I get her Konga(from petsmart) and I toss that across the room until she starts playing with it on her own. I find the Konga is good for teething dogs and giving them something interesting to chew on. Anyways that’s what works on my little 1 year old boxer. Hope the bloating gets better Cassey!❤

    Hey! I’m not a dog owner, so can’t offer any advice about George, but can I ask you a question? When you run to the gym, how do you carry things like your gym towel and water bottle? I would love to finish my runs at the gym and go straight to class (at the moment I have to go home and collect my things which always makes me later than I’d like to be for my classes!) but don’t want to be carrying all my things round in my hands on a run, and I feel like a backpack would be really bouncy…
    I’m so looking forward to seeing the new Popflex – it’s always so tempting!

      I drink a bunch of water before the run, and then I buy a bottle at the gym. I don’t bring a towel!

    For Sir George — I was thinking (If you hadn’t tried these!) Does he like chewing on Marrow bones? They usually keep doggies distracted for a while. Or you can get toys like KONG which you can fill with different things like Peanut Butter or Dog Food which keeps them occupied! Xx

    I think sir George just has too much energy and you need to play with him more (running for a ball etc.) or take longer walks, so he is tired and he WANTS and NEEDS to rest. My shih tzu always scratch me when she is bored and wants some fun – I just stop working, play with her, so she can utilize her energy, run and get tired (10-15 minutes of running around the house/searching for a treats I hide from her and she’s done). Before starting my work flow (I work at home) I take her for a loong walk too :-).

    I think your little George tries to tell you slow down and spend more time with him. He feels when he’s pet maybe you are not in that moment. My dog Taz it’s a french bulldog and I learn so much from him to slow down my life… And you aren’t behind with work. I think we work and run our lifes more than our body can keep it with us. So your bloating it’s also a sign that you push a limit. 😄🌈
