20 Things I learned in my 20s

happy bday

Hey guys!

I’ve officially been 30 for 3 days! How does it feel?

EXACTLY THE SAME.

In fact, I feel as energetic and as youthful inside as I did in college…except, in my personal opinion, I think I look better! And I am a lot wiser. Well, as wise as a 30 year old can be!

When I was a kid, I used to think I’d fall in love at 16, be married by 25 and have kids at 30. Thanks Disney movies.

Yes I am in love, but I am not married, and my kids are my businesses – so that’s a lot right now!

Today’s post will be a reflective one. I am thankful for every day that I get to live to see the next day, while being able to make cool things happen. Here are 20 things I learned in my 20s – in no particular order.

  1. Love is not finding someone you can live with. It’s finding someone you can’t live without.
  2. Follow your passion no matter what anyone says.
  3. Do more of what makes you happy and less of what doesn’t.
  4. Your friends are a reflection of who you are.
  5. There is no such thing as the perfect diet.
  6. There is no such thing as a perfect body.
  7. It’s ok to fail.
  8. You can’t trust everyone.
  9. If it feels wrong, it probably is.
  10. Confidence is more beautiful than external beauty.
  11. Never stop learning.
  12. Having too much ego will be your downfall.
  13. Every person has a back story. Try to understand them before you judge.
  14. Everything is possible, and you must never give up.
  15. Time is priceless. Don’t waste it.
  16. Give, give, give without expectation. And you shall receive.
  17. Being nice gets you way farther than being mean.
  18. Business isn’t about money. It’s about relationships.
  19. Your parents are people too and they are not perfect.
  20. Don’t be afraid to quit your job.

I think I could probably type up 100 more, but I’ll save that for another time.

I’m such a different person today than who I was when I was graduating college. It’s so interesting, because at every stage in my life (except at my 1st corporate job) I always felt super confident. My peers called me arrogant, but I think that’s what you get for being a “girl boss”. If a guy is “arrogant” he’s just being confident.

ANYWAY!

Confidence is what got me to where I am today. If I didn’t believe in myself, who would? You gotta believe in who you are, what you’re meant to do, and you just have to go for it. Don’t be afraid to fail. If you do, all you have to do is get up and try again. The thing is, if you don’t take any risk in life, your reward will not be grand. You’ve got to be bold!!! Don’t be scared!

With that said, I want to share with you pics from my bday party this weekend! My sis flew down and helped us prep the house for a party! I’ve been SLOWLY interior decorating over the past 3.5 years since I moved down to LA and I’ve never had a proper house warming. So when we decided to have the party at home, I went into a frenzy and bought furniture, decor, and curtains like a madwoman.

The whole weekend was “prom committee” central. Sam and I were building furniture, nailing and screwing things to the wall, while my sister was making crazy balloon arch creations from Pinterest. She even stopped by the LA Flower Market at 6AM to get fresh flowers (and baby pineapples) for the party. IT WAS SERIOUS.

Here’s how it all turned out!

construction

Low temperature hot glue gun is what’s holding the balloons together.

baby pineapples

I have a pen. I have an apple. Oooh! AH! Pineapple pen!

outdoor furniture

Bought outdoor furniture and a fire pit. I am so adult.

balloon arch

Night time vibes. Waiting for guests to arrive.

So we’ll take pics while we wait.

jason chen phil wang cassey ho

People started arriving and we made them wear hats. It’s Phil and Jason! We’re unicorns obviously.

lilly ro

Rosanna and Lilly! Missing Justine and Lindsey to round out the #RoyalSquad 😛

Can you believe my sister made this Matcha Green Tea Mille Cake? It was 40 layers thick!! AHHH I LOVE MATCHA!

green tea matcha mille cake

One of the most tedious cakes EVER. But so so YUMMY!!! If you want to make a healthy (and delish) version of this cake, check out my CHEAP CLEAN EATS Matcha Crepe Cake recipe here.

I am so grateful that my friends were able to make it out on a Sunday night and celebrate with me. I feel so lucky to have all of them in my life. Each one, so kind, talented and inspiring.

And thank you to YOU for reading this blog post and being with me on this journey into the land of 30. I wonder what things I’ll learn over the next 10 years…

Love you so much!

    Dear Cassey,
Happy birthday!! 🙂 I’ll be 30 in March, and I’ve just quit my job a month ago to start living a life true to myself, and reach for my goals and dreams with all my focus & strength! It feels like 2017 has a lot in store for me and I’m so excited! And the timing couldn’t be better to come across your videos & your blog. I’ve been doing your stretching & beginner workout routines for a few days only, but I’m already loving them! They give me so much confidence and positive vibes! I’ll be going into 2017 with you! Hi Cassey! Belated Happy Birthday! I just want you to know that I am a new fan and you inspire me so much. I have a very low self esteem because of what had happened to me and my family in the past but you are one of the persons who gives me hope that I will have my own time to shine, and I am just so thankful that people like you still exist. ? Please continue what you are doing, stay humble and positive. Kudos and love from your fan in the Philippines! ?

  5. Maria says:

Happy Birthday, Cassey! I turned 30 this past year, too–just a couple months before you. I couldn’t agree more with the list of things you’ve learned. It’s all so very true, and so many of those items are things we may have been told, but they don’t really sink in until we experience them for ourselves. I hope you have an amazing year and decade!

I have been a faithful popster for a little over two years now, although I recently took a short break. For my birthday, my husband and I found out we were expecting! Now that the intense nausea has passed, I’m trying to get back into it, albeit with a little less stamina. =) Thank you for being such a wonderful, inspiring instructor. Happy Birthday!!! xoxo

  6. Claudia Rodríguez Iturrino says:

Your house looks amazingly beautiful; I didn’t even know there were houses like that (and not appartments) in LA.
I’m truly happy you had a great birthday and a lovely party. You deserve nothing less than that! <3

  7. Sarah says:

Beautiful party! Thanks for the lesson–a great reminder at any age!

  8. Veronica Russo says:

Cassey, thank you so much for all what you do for us. You’re so inspiring! I’m 20 now, and you know what? I feel grateful to you, because you taught me to be a better person. I’m a popster for more than 3 years now and yeah, that’s one of the best thing which has happened to me. You helped me so so so much. I loved reading this list and I realized that that’s right what I’ve been learning too.
Hope you’re happy forever, you deserve it!
    Much much love 🙂

I can’t wait to go shopping. So many good ideas and your cake reminded me that I really want to try the matcha cake. I’m very happy that you had a great birthday. Looks like you had a ton of fun. Most of all, thank you for the list. As a girl in her twenties, over the last year, I’ve decided to change the things I don’t like for the better. Trying to make the most of my time and achieving goals that I wanted for myself. Finally taking care of me and getting to know self love. Thank you for helping me with my journey.

  28. Selman says:

Aaw! Congrats Cassey! Seeing you happy makes me so happy! <3

  29. GRP says:

Not to be nosy or anything but I would love if you shared who your love one is <3 so we can all know you in a deeper level

  31. Polly says:

Happy belated birthday, Cassey! I love how you listed the things you learned in your 20’s. I totally agree when you say you should never stop learning. I am now in my early 30’s and I feel like I am trying more new things and push myself out of my comfort zone more than when I was in my 20’s. It’s really amazing to learn new things and discover strengths that I never knew I had. 🙂

Happy birthday Cassey! I just turned 30 this last year as well… the beginning of another era. I agree to the tee with how you described it… the same, but more mature and I think I look heaps better too! 😛 Your party looked amazing and so much fun! 🙂

  33. Sonia S says:

Aww Happy Birthday! My lil girl had her bday the 16th and I’ll be 30 on the 30th!! So scary and exciting to enter that next era in my life, 30 just feels like “there’s no turning back, you’re for sure an adult now” lol having kids wasnt official enough ?

  34. Šárka says:

All the best, Cassey !!! Thank you for what kind of man you are, amazing, honest, beautiful. Either keep myself, you are a tremendous inspiration !!!! Beautiful birthday 🙂

  35. Mary Martinez says:

Happy Birthday! 30 never looked better! Cassey your such an inspiration, those lessons that you’ve learned are true! But I submitted my form for my Piit28 tank like a month ago, do you know what could have happened? I did piitsagram & every workout! I’m really upset, did I fill out the form wrong or something?

    1. blogilates says:

Hmm, can you write [email protected]? Maybe it did not submit.

I love your “20 things I learned in my 20s” list. I agree with soooooo many of those; you are so relatable! I am very happy you have found LOVE (omg cute!) and have the coolest career (YAAASS BLOGILATES) and the coolest sister (HI JACKELYN) and oh yeah you got to meet Taylor Swift (still so jealous haha) I love you and I enjoy your YouTube videos so much! I cannot wait to see what you come up with next!

Blogilates is my secret weapon and guilty pleasure! Being only 20, my health is super important to me, and you have been a true role model of health and fitness. January babies rock!!

  54. Winnie says:

Sounds like you had an amazing birthday 🙂
Your message was something I really needed to hear as this year I’ve started paving the way towards a brighter future both in body, mind and career and I would gladly tell you that Casey inspires most if not all of this desire to change myself and not “settle”. I’m already pretty active but I started working with a PT this year to help give me direction and he asked what my fitness goals were. I could only think that I wanted to become strong enough to do a freestanding handstand, I couldn’t imagine at all how I wanted my body to look.
As someone who has had an eating disorder and a co-occuring obsession with exercising excessively with time I have rediscovered my body and all the things that make me happy. Strength and adventure were concepts you made real and accessable to me, and I could never thank you enough.

  55. Petrina says:

Love getting your emails….it’s always good reading.. thanks so much for your inspiration.

  56. Maria Õunamägi says:

    Dear Cassey, happy birthday!
I have followed your calendar since AprilAbs of 2014, and am so happy to see how far you have come! Your routines are a important part of my life – each month I print out the calendar and mark my workouts there, it helps bring balance and happiness to my life, I could write pages on how you have impacted my life, but lets leave than for another day.

All I want to say is thank you for all you have done and are doing! 🙂

  57. happykeiko says:

#1 on your list is tearing me up. Thank you for this. I am so happy for you <3

  58. Emily says:

Happy Birthday Cassey! You are such a inspiration and such a positive influence to me, thank you for everything! <3

  59. Varis Varjo says:

    Happy Birthday, Cassey!
You look super happy, and I am also happy for you 🙂 I feel like you’re the type of person whose age is super hard to guess. I just realized I’ve been following you for about 4 years now and I think I will always think of you as a person in their mid-twenties, but somehow, to me, age has kinda lost it’s meaning. I turned 26 last September, but I don’t “feel” like that… and just got braces… when I don’t wear make up I guess I could still pass for 16 if I wanted to XD

  60. Samantha Lee says:

Happy birthday!! You decorated beautifully, and I am SO jealous of your backyard space. Where in LA do you live?? Haha.

  62. Suki says:

I loved your pictures, I’m glad you had a nice birthday.
Thank you for sharing what you learned through this years, I’m still in my twenties and there is no doubt I will keep all your advices in mind. 🙂 🙂
    xx

  63. Ivona says:

Happy birthday! Wish you all the best in the future. 🙂 I’ll be 24 soon so this post means a lot! I think it is more important how do you feel than how old are you. You know what they say, youth has no age. You look at least 5 years younger! Thanks for inspiring us, not just in this post, but with everything you do. 🙂

Cassey <3 So glad to find you turned 30 and that even in January… I turned 30 on 1st January too. Cassey you are true inspiration for me. There was a time in 2015 when I stopped during workout and cried loud because I was working out to get slim for people to appreciate me. My fiance told me I had the worst body on this planet.. and worst butt some woman will ever have. This year and two could not transform me into "perfect body" but today I am a totally different person. I LOVE my workout now. I look fwd to do my PIIT28 daily. Above all… I am HAPPY today.. see your picture on my DP. Its you.. you are my hero <3 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. PS: I love everyone's expressions in Train is Coming picture 😀

    1. Kimbers says:

Your fiance sounds like a horrible man. A decent partner would encourage you… not put you down.

    2. blogilates says:

Oh no, why did he say that? He should not talk to you like that. I’m glad that you’re working hard for YOU. Stay strong girl!

  83. Just you wait cassey–I’m gonna be the next youtuber you’ll befriend and I’ll be coming to your 31st party. 😉

  87. There’s no way you’re 30! Oh my gosh you look like you’re 23! I swear it was like yesterday you said you turned 26… time flies. You’re beautiful 🙂

Happy birthday Cassey! I sure am thankful you were born!

Happy Birthday! Nice list it is very similar to my own. As an add on to the excellent list above: On the more practical side one of the important things I learned to do well in my 20s was how to budget, save and invest my earnings. On the non-practical side I also learned not to be afraid of major change; change can be good even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time.

Happy birthday! Love #10 and #20. If you aren’t happy with your job, it’s going to carry over to all areas of your life. It’s all about finding balance in life.

    1. I’d also like to add that I love number one. It hit me deep.

While I’ve been learning these things in my 20’s, I haven’t really been “practicing” them… well, at least the ones you can “learn from”. Basically, I’ve just been drowning in stress, money issues, and a lack of friends lately that I don’t even know what to do with this knowledge now that I have it.
