"During my childhood, I never felt beautiful. Through the years, I just crawled into my corner and sought comfort in the foods I ate, because that was the only thing that was constant in my life. I gained so much weight which only lead to further seclusion of myself with my food and books because that was all I needed. or so I thought.
In high school, when I reached my peak weight, I remember looking in the mirror and being completely disgusted with myself. I felt fat with my thunder thighs, flabby arms and huge stomach, I felt ugly and absolutely horrific. But I had friends and family who accepted me for who I was and supported me in my endeavors.
I realize now that although I needed to change how I looked physically, but most importantly I needed to change how I felt about myself as a person. My confidence and self consciousness was at an all time low. But going to college changed all of that.
At my university, I was surrounded by beautiful people with drive and confidence beyond any I have witnessed. I became motivated to change myself, with my physical attributes first. I knew better than taking the easy way, so I embarked on the tough route. After 2 years of eating healthy (and exercising when I could), I lost 30 pounds. For the first time I felt better about myself.
From then on, I needed to change my mindset. I gradually put myself in positions where I needed to be confident and comfortable with myself. For example, in leadership positions or mentorship, I wanted my own mentees to understand their own self-worth, how could I preach what I don’t practice? This was the most mentally challenging change I knew I had to make about myself. With time, I became comfortable with myself, and I learned to love myself more and more each day.
Yes, it is easier to criticize myself but being positive and being in control of my body and my mind has been priceless and kept me humble instead of flaunting and being haughty. Although it took years to find my inner beauty, I have undergone the transformation from awkward to awesome! (or at least I’m still trying to).
I feel beautiful knowing my happiness with myself as a person, as a girl, as a woman in this society. I feel beautiful when I am able to contribute back to my community through my actions and devoting my skills to give back to those less fortunate than me. I feel beautiful when I know I am not perfect, but I can try to BE and DO the best I possibly could.
All of this would not have been possible without my unwavering support of my family/friends and all of the people I have met who have pulled me out of my corner. THEY made me feel loved and beautiful, and without them I would not be where I am today.
Thank you for reminding us of our beauty with each blog and video you post! When I read/watch your videos, I find great encouragement and positive energy that I apply to my own life on a daily basis. I look forward to seeing your entries "
"All my life I was told down right that I was fat…I can remember doctor visits where my doctor would look down at me and tell me you are just too fat Cari…my sister once told me that nobody will ever marry a fat girl… a kid at school one time followed me home and taunted me the whole way calling me fatty,I was told by one of my “boyfriends” that I was too fat to be with. WOW that all hurt soo much and I will never forget any of that. When I started to loose all the weight I started to get compliments from people saying wow you look soo thin, wow you look so different but never did anyone tell me I was pretty. Until one day I was crying about the whole boyfriend thing (which i am doing right now as I write this) and my mom came in and asked what was wrong and I just lost it and told her even though I was finally “skinny” no one still wanted to date me…my mom told me that beauty is not something someone can tell you. You are beautiful is something you have see in yourself and realize why that makes you feel pretty or beautiful….I have never forgotten that…When I look in the mirror and see my so called “ugly” stretch marks as most would say I think they are pretty because they show a weight battle won…I look at the flab on my arms and say hey that is beautiful because that used to be all unhealthy fat and now its another beautiful battle scar of my weight loss journey….Beautiful is not a material possession that makes me feel beautiful but looking at my long hard journey to healthy is what makes me feel beautiful…every time I look in the mirror and see the curve in my waist I feel beautiful, when I see toned arms instead of unhealthy arms I feel beautiful, and most of all I feel beautiful when I sweat because its sweat and hard work that has made me believe that I am beautiful and lovable."

INGREDIENTS (yields about 18 cookies):
- 1 cup oat flour
- 1 cup dates, chopped
- 1 cup nuts (I used cashews and pecans) chopped
- 1/2 cup Stevia
- 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
How to make oat flour? Just blend up some oats! This was my amazing discovery of the day! Don't buy oat flour! Just make it! Much cheaper. And quite gratifying.

Next, my sister and I wanted to do some artwork. I haven't had time to do ANY SORT of art since I made those waterbottle flowers inspired by Anthropologie. That was more than a year ago.
Jackelyn found something on Pinterest involving crayons and a blow dryer. So this is what came out of it!
Cool yeah? All you have to do is buy a blank canvas (you can get a pack of 2 from Michaels for $10 but with their 50% off coupon, each canvas is only $2.50! SCORE!!!), some crayons, a hot glue gun, and a blow dryer. It takes about 30-45 sec for the crayons to start melting but it's pretty epic when the first one "bursts". Make sure you angle the drippage. This means you need to rotate the board as you blow.

I was also fortunate enough to hang out with the one and only Billy Blanks! Tae Bo master!!! He is so inspirational. I met him last year (virtually) when I was part of YouTube Next Trainer. One of our "prizes" was the chance to speak with an established fitness celebrity on Google Hangout. He talked about all the risks he took to get where he is now - and how he followed his passion and didn't listen to what producers and directors were telling him to do. He's such a humble guy and so willing to help. He even invited me to come work out with him. Not gonna lie, kinda intimidated but ummm...so not passing up that offer!!!! Might have to film this. I will be even more uncoordinated than how I am with Jackelyn in our POP Kick Series! BTW she returned back to the states today! So prepare for more cardio vids!

I ended the weekend by kinda catching up on sleep and laying out in the sun! Traveling is fine but I seriously get soooo off track with my diet and training. So another one of my goals this year is to travel less. And only do it when I have to. It really wears my body and spirit down!

Also, the Blogilates Community is totally in development now. We finally got out of planning mode. These projects take so long but are well worth it! I promise you. You will love love love! The only thing I ask is that once the community goes into full swing, I want all of us to respect one another. Just because we are communicating over the internet, it doesn't mean you can say things without consequences. The community will have moderators to make sure that we all stay positive! I want it to be a place where we can all feel safe and accepted.

I will be ESPECIALLY looking out for enthusiastic members of the community for the next month to beta-test the new platform that you all will be a part of! I YOLO'd this weekend and I YOLO'd HARD.This is the Traditional 14" Chicago Deep Dish Pizza at Masa in Echo Park topped with ridiculous amounts of cheese, sausage, and mushroom. These pics do not do it justice. I swear it was larger than life. When the pizza came out I screamed and said, "OH MY GAWD!!!!! INSTAGRAM!!! HOLD ON!!!!" I like showing you guys these pics because I want you to know that it's ok to eat indulgent food once in a while! I had already been working out extra hard for 5 days since the beginning of the month, so I don't know what my body fat was but this was my starting body fat percent on July 5th: 21.5%.
6 days a week I did all kinds of POP HIITs in addition to teaching my POP Pilates classes 2x a week. In fact, it was the extra hard workouts from June that inspired me to share with you my intense gym workouts for the #thisisMYJULY calendar. You should check out POP HIIT 1 and POP HIIT 2 if you haven't already! This month I am releasing 9 of my personal routines. Watch out for 3 and 4 coming Tues and Thursday! After a month of working out HARD CORE and eating clean (lots of veggies, lean protein, and water), not only did I end up weighing 120.6 lbs...
My body fat went down!
18.3%! Yay! I was so happy to see this number go down every week. You know, a lower weight and body fat % are not the ultimate goals for me. They never are. Getting fitter and STRONGER are. To me, losing weight is like making money. You should never focus on it or else it will make the whole journey so excruciating and passionless. If you were at work and were equating every minute of your day to how many dollars you were making every minute, you'd drive youself INSANE. Plus if you focused on $$$ all day long, how could you focus on how good you were doing your job? Instead, refocus. Figure out how to get better at your work and then you'll get promoted. You'll end up making more $ as a RESULT!! See what I am trying to say? Stop trying to figure out how to lose weight fast and stop being fixated on the number on the scale. Instead, focus on how to train your best and your hardest. Focus on having fun cooking clean. The pounds and the body fat will melt off as a RESULT. That's what I did.
Here is a chart from the American Council of Exercise (ACE) on what body fat percentages are healthy for the average person based on gender and age. Do not confuse this with BMI which takes into account your weight and height...and to me...is not a very helpful number.
According to this chart, I am in the "athlete" level which is pretty cool! I will continue working hard this month too because I have an important shoot in August. I think Dietbet was a perfect kickstart to get me revved up for the craziness of summer! The whole community of POPsters training hard all over the world really motivated me to work my butt off even more! I really felt your energy on the Blogilates Dietbet page. The feed was constantly being updated with inspirational posts and pics to help drive others to reach their best success.
What I really liked about the Dietbet was that there was no one "Biggest Loser". Everyone who participated won. Whether or not you reached your 4% weight loss goal, you probably were headed towards the right direction anyway. I liked that you were competing against yourself, not your friends. This helped build community. In fact, I decided to give out prizes to special POPsters who really helped keep the spirit alive. Here are some special awards I'd like to give out:

I saw that a lot of POPsters wanted to keep the momentum up and do another Dietbet! I have not decided if I will do another one, but if there is enough interest, we may do an August one for anyone that wants the extra motivation for summer's end! I am so proud of everyone who trained beast style last month. Your enthusiasm for healthy living always energizes me!

For spring roll...(multiple servings)
- rice paper pack
- block of tofu (seasoned with soy sauce, Stevia, black pepper)
- lettuce or any type of spring mix
- medley of veggies (I used carrots and purple cabbage in this recipe)
169 calories for 2 rolls
For sauce...(2 servings)
- 4 TBS of Hoison sauce
- 1/2 lemon
- 1 tsp Sriracha
135 cals for 2 servings
1. Chop all your veggies
2. Slice your tofu block into "steak fry" size
3. Fill your tupperware with some soy sauce (1/4-1/3 cup), Stevia (2 tsp), and black pepper (couple pinches)
4. Put your tofu steaks in the pool of soy sauce. Marinate for a few minutes.
5. Light your stove to medium high. Oil lightly. Place tofu steaks on. Pour rest of soy sauce over it. Let sizzle. Flip ater 3-5 min.
6. Fill a shallow plate with water. Dip your rice paper in - make sure all sides are wet. Lay flat on another plate.
7. Fill with veggies and tofu steaks. Wrap up like a burrito!!
8. Dip in your sauce and eat. YUM!!!
A serving costs about $0.75 when at the store it's like $6.99! Big diff people. Big diff. Eat at home to know what's going into your food, into your mouth, and also...to save $$!Now for more fun stuff! It's giveaway time! If you're like me and LOOOOOOOVE taking pics of your food before you eat (it's like my way of blessing the meal) then you need to seriously protect your phone from the dangers of the dining table!!! I mean seriously...ice cream, soup, sizzling platters...it's a war zone for delicate technology! I was using the Lifeproof Fre case in this video and was sooooo scared to drop my phone and submerge it in water. K listen, true story: my screen was shattered for a couple months and I had just found some time to get it fixed like literally the day before I filmed this video. Costed me $120 just to change the glass so I really did not want to break it again. When we filmed, I actually dropped it in that water filled plate 5 different times, 5 different ways, from 5 different heights. Each time, my heart skipped a beat. But you know what? My phone was unharmed! Isn't it great when products actually do what they're supposed to do? So good. The Lifeproof Fre case is designed to withstand underwater submersion which I think is OUT OF THIS WORLD!! I must test this and try to film an "Aqualates" video or something...what do you think? Also...remember how I was telling you about the epic 12 Week New Body Makeover Meal Plan I was prepping for you guys? Well it's getting closer and closer to the release date as I work with the certified nutritionists over at WeightTraining.com to bring you a well-balanced and optimally planned program to help you reach your best fitness goals in 12 weeks.
Why 12 weeks? That is about how long it takes to completely transform your body. I mean, completely. You will look and feel like a whole different human being. A lot of the work is in the exercise, but even more of it is in the diet. That's why you'll notice that if you are working out a lot and not losing weight...well, you should probably check the food you're eating.
Did you know your physique is a result of 70% diet and 30% exercise?
A lot of people will say "Yes yes I eat very clean!" But most of the time that is not the case. That or they don't know how much they are eating. You'd be surprised at how quickly calories can add up which totally sabotages your diet. And...it's not just about calories! NOPE.
A calorie is not a calorie is not a calorie.
If you ate white bread for 12 weeks and stayed under 1000 calories everyday versus eating lean protein and veggies at about 1800-2000 calories a day, your body would look sooooooo different!
Thin with very little energy on the bread diet...muscular, strong, and full of energy on the clean eating diet.
Bread is made of carbs which is not bad if you use that energy right away. (That's why runners "carb up" right before a race.) But most people don't use all of it and it ends up being stored as fat...quickly. That's why people say carbs make you fat.
So why doesn't more calories from protein make you "fat"? Because protein is actually the building block of muscle!! As long as you're working out with weight (body weight counts too as in with Pilates) then you are fueling your body with what it needs to get stronger! It is important to note that you need a good balance of carbs, fats, and protein to function optimally as a human being so don't disregard any of these macronutrients. None is really superior to the other. You need all - just in the right portions.
What you eat and when you eat in relation to when you work out is super crucial. Like a workout plan, it is important to make sure you change up the food once in a while so you can stay happy and healthy mentally and physically. Sure chicken and broccoli will help you lose weight quickly, but don't tell me that anyone is happy doing that 24/7. There are many other ways to get lean without boring your taste palette. There's a whole world of natural goodness out there!!
So that's why I spent a lot of time developing this 12 Week New Body Makeover Meal Plan with certified nutritionists. We designed it to make it easy for you to transition into clean eating in Phase 1. The second and third phases will help your body to continue leaning out while still providing food variety and all the nourishment you will need to get through your workouts.
You will be eating 5x a day to keep your metabolism revved up! Do not worry. You will not be hungry. You will probably be eating more than you have (volume wise), feeling full, and feeling awesome. That's what clean eating does. It's kinda like magic...but not...because it's how we all should be eating to feel our best!!

Yesterday I was online and I saw that someone asked me about my thoughts on the "bikini bridge." I was like excuse me what. Then I searched the hashtag and all this showed up:
I was like whoa, hold on - is this the next inner thigh gap of 2014!? Like seriously!!?? I went on google and found the definition:
"phenomenon wherein bikini bottoms are suspended between the two hip bones, causing a space between the bikini and the lower abdomen."
I got so outraged that I immediately tweeted this:

You guys seemed to be equally upset about the whole thing and left over 1,000 comments on my facebook post! At least you were aware of the absurdity of this obsession. Well...now the story gets more interesting.
Fast forward to today...I find myself on The Daily Dot as a prominent player in 4Chan's hoax. YA. A HOAX. 4Chan manipulated social media and fooled all of us into thinking this was actually the next unhealthy obsession of teen girls.
They succeeded through creating fake accounts, posting memes everywhere, and playing on our emotions...and I was fooled. But you know what? I'm not upset. I'm glad they brought attention to it and made a parody out of how superficial...how silly...some young women have gotten when it comes to achieving beauty. First it was all about the distance between your thighs. Now it's how high your hips can protrude from your body. At some point, I believe that this bikini bridge thing would have gotten to the level of thigh gap. There were already pictures being posted. It just needed time to swirl in the inner circles of Tumblr.
We're now standing on the outside looking in on a weird phenomenon being played out in front of our eyes. You can see clearly how ridiculous this is right? So ridiculous that a bunch of guys over at 4Chan could poke fun at our desire for vanity and play on our insecurities. Ya, that's kinda mean...but we're so conditioned to think we need to be thin that we actually believed this was true.
So here's what I want you to take from this. Bikini bridge or not, don't base your self worth and your beauty on it. Same with thigh gap. Or flat abs. Or having big boobs. Don't be superficial enough to sacrifice your happiness in attaining one of these physical attributes. The only reason why we want these things is because someone tells us we need it. Kinda like a commercial. You didn't know that you needed that car or those sexy stilettos until you saw a commercial for it. And they keep pushing and pushing it on you. The media shows us pictures of skinny models with perfect hair, skin, nails, and bodies in magazines and on TV. We want what we see. They keep showing us more and more and more of what's so unrealistic to attain for most.
A thoughtful quote I want you to think about is this: "Comparison is the thief of joy."
Focus on yourself and spend your energy on reaching your own potentials. Not racing against or being like someone else. We're all made to contribute to this world differently.
As far as unhealthy obsessions go, stop it. Find your fire and your passion for working out and eating right. Your desire for pure vanity is not enough to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Dig deep and discover your inner motivation for getting fit and being happy. Once you figure this out, I promise your life and your body will sculpt itself accordingly. You have my meal plans and workout calendars to help guide you the whole way. I am here for you, to be your friend and your personal trainer.

I'm getting ready for my POP Pilates DVD shoot tomorrow (oops, I didn't tell you?!) and am preparing my body and energy for a long day of working out! This is what I am drinking right now to detox and de-bloat so that I will look my best tomorrow. You should try it too...it's refreshing, yummy, and easy to prepare!
Here's how I prepare my Natural Belly Slimming Detox Water:
- 1-2 Liters water
- 1 cucumber
- 1 lemon
- 1 orange
- 10-15 fresh mint leaves
- handful of ice
Why this combo?
1. Cucumber: contains citrulline which is an amino acid that has been shown to help our liver and kidneys get rid of ammonia which is a by product of the proteins our bodies burn for energy.
2. Water: helps flush toxins and waste through our system while keeping us hydrated.
3. Lemon: stimulates the digestive track so it's helpful if you have constipation, heartburn, or gas.
4. Mint: helps you digest effectively because it improves the flow of bile from the liver to the gallbladder to the small intestine to break down dietary fats. It also helps relax cramped up stomach muscles.
5. Orange: contains flavonoids in the peel and juice that stimulate the immune system and protects against a fungi/pests while helping to reduce cholesterol levels.
By the way, when I say detox, I'm still eating! Clean and light so I can feel energetic and look awake tomorrow! I'm avoiding anything too salty because that will retain water and make me look puffy. You can prepare the water the night before so that when you wake up, it will be flavorful. I also don't leave the fruits in the water for longer than 24 hrs. By that time all the nutrients will be in the water anyway. PLUS you want to prevent any sort of bacteria or mold growth.
Hope you guys give it a try. And you can drink this all the time - not just for photoshoots or special occasions. It makes water drinking a lot more tasty actually!

I've been SOOOOO loving your inspiration boards so far! They are colorful, motivating, and beautiful! This month I wanted to do something different and have us all do one project together. The Inspiration Board or "vision board" is a great way to put a focus on what you want most so that you can achieve it. The point is to keep your goals close so that you can envision seeing them...and then eventually you WILL make them happen!
1. Just collect pics and quotes of things that inspire you to live your best life.
