Heartbeat Heaven + Why Vegan Food Makes you Fart…yes, I really did just say that

Hey POPsters!!!

There’s your new video! It’s a series of fabulous new moves that will get your heart beating like nuts!! Then we end with some rolling supermans which look silly, but they are fun and sooooo good for you back and abs! Give it a try! I know you will love!!!

I hope you got a chance to download the new #FEELFABFEB calendar. I got a lot of emails and messages saying that you couldn’t get the password right. Be sure you are typing in the actual feb password, not the discount code!

And now for some picture fun!

My friend Cory who I have known since middle school came over to see my new apt and catch up. So what do I do? Invite her to have vegan dinner of course!! And well, ya know, before we start any meal there’s the “giving thanks” part so everyone get out your iPhones and take a pic of your food! Beware that if you ever go to dinner with me, your food may get cold before you touch it ;P

What? I have to instagram ok!???

Brussel sprouts with candied walnuts and forbidden (black) rice over portabella mushroom! From Real Food Daily in Santa Monica, CA. DELISH.

As you know, I am a big vegan food enthusiast! So whenever I go out with friends, I usually suggest a cool vegan spot. It allows me to indulge in how creatively tasty plant based foods can be! However, I want to warn people who are trying vegan foods for the first time. If you are drastically changing your diet to all plant based, you may get a ton of bloating! In fact, it wasn’t til recently that I noticed a correlation between my stomach hurting and vegan dinners.

The high fiber content in the vegan meal feeds the bacteria in your intestines and they produce gas as they digest the plant material. Therefore, an intolerance to the new heavily plant-based foods creates a situation where gasses build up – causing your belly to inflate and get uncomfortable! And yes, I know you’re thinking. Yes, this causes flatulence. Majorly.

This bloating thing surprises me though because I actually eat a lot of veggies daily, so I am unsure as to why this is still happening. I do know my stomach is quite sensitive so I suppose I will need to diagnose myself more closely the next time I go out. See what foods I’m specifically pairing.

Don’t let bloating scare you from eating veggies or trying a vegan diet though! Usually it’s temporary during the adjustment period and you can always take something like Beano, eat yogurt with active live cultures, or take a probiotic to help with the gas.

Afterwards we decided to have a random photo sesh! (Cuz that’s what you do on a Friday night, right?) Busted out our best model poses but nothing could beat the Pilates poses I pulled outta my back pocket. Here’s Cobra on a Dolphin. Wait a minute…this actually looks like that scene from…

  1. Those meals look so yummy! Speaking of vegan food I’ve recently been trying out some vegan raw recipes and I made raw rice out of cauliflower! It was a lot of fun to make and eat, you can check it out here: http://healthnutnutrition.wordpress.com/2013/02/19/low-carb-cauliflower-rice/

  2. Looks like you had a great meal and a fun time.
I’ve been a vegan for such a longtime that I don’t even remember the transition effects on my body. What ever the temporary discomforts are, it’s worth it in the longrun, because the health benefits are amazing.

  3. Hi Cassey,
I’ve been eating very clean (gluten free) and have upped my veggie intake. This may sound like a silly question, but is it possible to eat TOO many veggies? It’s what I turn to when I am having ‘snarky’ days…I’ll steam a few cups of veggies and eat up. To me it seems like a better choice than splurging on unhealthy choices I really want (I’m usually craving dried fruits, nuts, sweets!) Advice?!?

  4. Now I want to watch little mermaid. <3
I know what you mean by farting after eating VEGAN FOODS..Oh my goodness…
and like, when I am in public, I am embarrassed to fart, so I wait till I get home, but that's a totally
uncomfortable feeling. My stomach feels soo huge when so much gas is built up…

  5. test

  6. Look into grain intolerances…from what you describe of your symptoms and the whole grains you recommend, I suspect that these (in combo with higher fiber/sulfurous veggies) could be the culprit! Eating clean for me means ultra low carb, because so many of the grains give me gas/diarrhea/tummyaches! Interestingly enough, your body has an insulin spike as a response to grains, treating it just like a sugar…

  7. I love that you talk about vegan stuff so much now :)

  8. Okay Cassey, you need to make a Little Mermaid workout now. Or maybe do a Disney series! Ok, sorry. I had to.

  9. Hey Cassie! I am fairly new to your blog, I started doing your “Beginner’s POP Pilates” every two weeks or so around Christmas. I used to work daycare at a gym and it was awesome! I got a free membership and would get off work and head straight to the elliptical. I was in fantastic shape and loved it! Then I got married, switched jobs, and lost my free employee membership :( It’s been about a year and a half since then and while I haven’t gained a ton of weight, I feel jiggly and bleh. I’ve started to avoid looking in the mirror and don’t feel comfortable in my clothes anymore.

I was excited and nervous to try the February calendar since I am in awful shape, but wanted to give it my best! So I started today and while I had to modify the reps and sometimes the moves themselves, I did every single video all the way through (woohoo!) I am so pumped to know that I can do this! So if anyone out there is thinking of doing it but is nervous at the amount of videos, etc. YOU CAN DO IT! My form wasn’t perfect and I feel super tired now, but I did it! Thank you Cassie for making videos that normal people can do but that push us to keep trying. I’m so excited to feel fab about my body come the end of February! <3 <3 <3

  11. Casey! those brusel sprouts look AMAZing yum! love your blogposts

  12. Hey Cassey, I won the POPster envelope necklace back a the beginning of January and I never got my prize… Just wondering when ill get it!

  13. More hiit videos, PLEASE CASEY?:D

  14. Hey Cassey,
Great video and great leg workout – but what happened to the usual uplifting pop music?? Sorry, but the background music for me wasn’t great and I don’t think it really represents you and ‘pop pilates’.
    Regards

  15. i’m almost vegan, and I haven’t this problem, but I know I just CAN’T digest cooked cabbage, raw it’s ok, but cook it’s just a nightmare. Most of my family have the same probleme, si maybe it’s the same for you ?

  16. Whole wheat pasta brought me that vegan food situation you are describing. I really wanted to keep eating it and tried several times, but it didn’t get any better and I had to quit. Mixing half of regular pasta may possibly help…

  17. Broccoli about the only veggie that really gets my tummy & I have been vegan for 20 years :)

  18. Cassey, that meal looks soooooo amazing! Thanks for daring to tell us about ALL the after-effects too! :-) Normally I would never ask this, but now I have a bit more courage so…quick question for you or any other vegan or mostly vegan out there: whenever I go for more than a few days eating a strictly plant-based diet, I have intestinal problems that go way beyond bloating and gas, if you know what I mean. I’ve assumed that I just have to eat meat to stay healthy, but I’d rather not. Has anyone else had this problem, and can it actually go away after a while? I should add that I already avoid sugar and most processed foods.

    • As in you constantly have to use the bathroom or as in actual pain? Because if it is just having to use the bathroom all the time, then that is normal especially at first because your body is “detoxing” and just isn’t use to all those yummy fiber filled veggies and fruits! Also, vegans just go to the bathroom 3 x plus a day! Which I loooove because I know my food isn’t just getting backed up ;) hehe. But if what you mean is actual pain then it could just be that you are eating too much of a certain fruit or veggie and at times eating too much of a certain food can be harmful. So I would say just make sure you are literally eating the rainbow and if a certain veggie/fruit does not sit well with you then try reducing it or just overall skipping it and add something else! I know that too much kale or 100% beet juice is not good for ya (50% mixed with something else is ideal).
      Good luck,

      Vegan Val ;)

      • Thanks so much, Val! I think I’ve experienced both of what you describe. I get worried because I have a lot of food intolerances, and I wonder if I’m intolerant of legumes, which seem to be a main source of protein when you’re vegan. But now I wonder if I just need to try being strictly vegan for a month, or something like that, and see how it goes. It’s helpful to have more information on what happens to your body when you start the vegan diet and to know that some intestinal issues are normal.

  19. OMG Cassey I’m scared of butterflies too!! LOL
Apparently so is Nicole Kidman! There’s an actual name for the fear – but I always feel so much better when someone awesome shares it with me!
LOVED this hiit especially flying superman – thats one to do with my kids too!
    Thank you!!

  20. Hi, just wanted to know what alternatives to the printable workouts there would be since i dont have an elliptical at home. same goes for the stairmaster. suggestions?

  21. Amanda Brown says:

Going back and forth between vegan meals and non-vegan meals definitely will give you gastrointestinal problems. It’s because if you are not vegan, your intestinal wall is layered with all the difficult to digest processed food of a non-vegan diet. Fruits and veggies flush through the system quickly and when they are eaten after processed food, which takes a long time to digest, the veggies and fruit sit on top and ferment, which creates gas. This is especially true if you eat a lot of breads, pastas, and the like. Once you eat stop eating processed foods, this fermentation problem goes away because your intestines are cleaned out. I’d also like to add that not all vegans eat properly and can still be unhealthy if they consume a lot of processed foods. Processed foods include breads, pastas, cereal, sugar, fake meats, and anything that does not come straight from nature.

  22. haha loved the last move rolling-superman stuff:)
I just finished my workout but can’t wait to do it next time ;)

  23. i love doing hiits! i always feel so energized afterwards.

Cassey, you should do a challenge to “Thrift Shop”! it would be killer and super fun!

I started watching your videos a few months ago and it really changed my life for the better. I’ve always been the sits-on-the-couch-all-day kind of girl. Now I eat clean and I actually ENJOY working out!! :)

Keep up the amazing work Cassey. and thank you thank you thank you for always being such a great inspiration!!!! x

  26. Hi Cassey,
Your vegan meal looks amazing! Have you thought about consuming some digestive enzymes before a meal? I’ve started to do that in January, and I find it helps a LOT in terms of the gas, etc. :)

  27. Umm your meals seem so yummyyyyy! I have to find vegan spots in France! ;)

  28. I’ve been having this exact problem this past week! Darn all these veggies, hahah.

  29. That looks so good, I may have to try making that! I became a vegan over a year ago and I still get gas and bloat, but not really any pain anymore. If you’re going to go vegan, even for a week there are a couple of things you can do. The first is drink a lot of water, with all that fiber you are essentially flushing your system, it will feel like a cleanse. While many think water may cause bloat, if you have a lot of fiber in your system and don’t drink a lot, the bloating will worsen. Move around a lot! Exercise will may you pass gas, but it will not be so bad later. I do Cassey’s videos before going to the gym or anywhere else and all that gas is gone after! Try eating less variety of food groups for meals: for example eat protein with carbs for one, just veggies or fruit for snacks, and protein plus a veggie, fruit or carb for another meal or two. Eating one type of food group makes it a little easier for your body to digest and your system is a little less irritated when you eat like this. Also, get a probiotic, I recommend Good Belly because it’s vegan-friendly; this will help digestion as well. Drinking some mint tea or tea that helps digestion is another alternative. I also do some yoga moves for digestion cleansing on days that I feel “off” digestive wise. The vegan lifestyle, including diet, can be very rewarding and I would hate for anyone to be put-off by gas or bloating. The more research and knowledge you do and have the easier and more comfortable you will be. Good luck! : )

  30. Ha! Your post actually helps explain some “discomfort” I was experiencing this week. I feel a lot better knowing what an explanation might be. Thanks!

  31. You should do a Disney princess workout(s)! That would be a way to really start teaching younger kids that exercise is important. It would be fun for mom and daughter or whoever to be able to do it together! You could also make up some healthy recipes and give them princess themed names!

  32. Ivori Rose says:

I like the Bulgarian yogurt from White Mountain Foods ; 90 Billion live probiotics per serving, packed in glass for purity and no thickeners or stabilizers. They also make the MOST delicious tofu vegan dips and spreads !

  33. That looks so yummy! I would eat there daily, if I lived anywhere near that place! I am vegan actually, but eating Brussel sprouts always makes me look and feel like one myself, so I guess it’s a little more specific than that! ;) (p.s. if you watch big bang theory, you might want to refer to the episode with Sheldon v Brussel sprouts, it really drives the point home)

  34. So funny. If you are eat vegetables from the brassica family (brussel sprouts, cabbage, brocoli, cauliflower) you may have a case of the vapors. Those vegetables all have sulfer in them which make you gasey. The older the veggies the more gasey they may make you. And then fiber, yeah, that contributes too.

  35. haha cassey you’re hilarious :)

I’m an avid healthy eater, and I get all of my breakfast recipes from http://www.healthyrevelations.wordpress.com. They are soooooooo good and feel super sinful (because they’re pretty much all based off high calorie desserts), but they’re actually really low in calories and really healthy for you.

That vegan meal looks awesome btw. I wish we had restaurants like that around here

    • Thank you for the website suggestion Kelly, I can’t wait to try the Healthy Apple Pie Oatmeal!

I love this site, between Cassey and everyone’s comments, I’ve been getting so many new ideas. :)

    • nice way to plug your website, i will check it out.

    • You get all your recipes from that site? You ARE that site. You’re posting the recipes there so they’re your recipes. Haha. You’re not getting them off the site you’re putting them ON the site. That’s funny.
